how do i shorten the character length??

hi i have a little problem with the character length in my recent_comments block.
i would like to limit the view of the comment title.
unfortunately my php knowledge is very bad.
i have heard from the "xoops_substr" command and i tried a bit in the system_block.php with it, but the result was, that nothing has changed.
so can anyone help me?
