Not currently, but it has been suggested before and will be considered for the next version.

if you want just to hide the versioning, just delete version from the template or wherever it is, and than in the new article area, you can just modify the versioning checkboxes or whatever they are, to ON by default - checkbox[new version]? = set always to yes.

sorry for nonPro help, but i did it for myself a long time ago and so i'm just giving you the psevdocode :P
