I read with interest the announcement "Light at the End" and have a question:

I love the features in 2.2 and would not like to give them up. If, however, I were to start a new site today, and if the ultimate objective is to later upgrade to 2.3, would it be better to begin with 2.2.x or 2.0.13? I am asking because I read that 2.3 will be based upon 2.0.13 and thought that a later upgrade from 2.0.13 to 2.3 would be easier than one from 2.2.x to 2.3.

I strongly recommend 2.0.13.1 for the very reasons you sited. Also, there are still a lot of modules that don't work right with 2.2.x. A stable release of 2.2.x is coming out soon, but for now, 2.0.13.1 would be the prudent choice.
