it seems since i upgraded my newbb module i can't change anything on my users. i have tried changing screen names, url's and user groups. i keep getting a "User name already exists." even if the name doesn't exist or when i change say user group.

I had a lot of trouble, too. Are you on the latest CBB? If you are and you are having trouble, this is what I ended up doing: I did a clean install into a test site and I compared file structures. It turned out that something had happened and my user and user_profile and user_profile_fields files hadn't gotten updated properly. Once I cleaned up that problem, everything was fixed. Good luck!
