Multi languages

I would like to offer multi languages on my site (instead of referring folks to Babelfish). I tried adding it twice already and it didn't work. Something went haywire in the process and I ended up having to redo my entire site TWICE. (I had no back up either). I am hesitant to try myself but desperately want to add this feature and provide as many languages as possible. Is anyone able to assist me?
