Templates - Simply clone and modify?

If I want to change an existing template can I just clone and modify it? Once I'm done am I amble to change to that template? Doesn't seem to allow me.

When you clone a template you are asked to give it a name.

To use the cloned template go to Site Preferences > General Settings > click on Edit and scroll down to Default Template Set, and select the name of your cloned template from the dropdown list.
