I am a smarty user, its really powerful but its hard to create a more e-commercial site when you dont have too much php experience.

So far I've managed http://www.surfinfire.com They can login, signup and sign for surf camp sessions/private session.

Xoops seems perfect for what I need, because this site isn't that big, but it needs to work, and I just dont have the time to continue working on it since I will be leaving my client and I want him to be able to maintain the site. I even made an admin section for him to change stuff on the site w/o know anything but signing and typing, but its still far from what XOOPS offers.

One of the things I am currently poundering about is how/where can i extend the varibles of users to include the varibles needed to signup for surfing lessons. Would I have to go into the database for that then just ruffle though the XOOPS folder in hope to find what I need? (was going though docs but im coing up empty)
