The XOOPS notification system is useful. But from PM summary screen - to PM detail screen - to forum thread - means 3 open windows. I generally wind up working in the last window to open, leaving the others open in the background and wasting resources. Trying to navigate back to delete the notifications can become a nightmare. Could all be done in the one window IMHO. Grrr. In fact, triple Grr.
