Making Recent News block with the contents of the latest news (news_item.html)

I have a problem, I just want a block like the index of the News module. I've changed news_item.html in the templates dir so now it shows only 1 news subject in stead of all news subject. Now I want to show the news_item.html as a block on the frontpage, but the variables won't work that way.

Can anyone help me with this block?

Can anyone tell me where the variables will be defined to let news_item.html work? I want to show the contents of news_item.htlm as a block. That block works fine, but I don't see any contents because the variables aren't defined!!
