Please could someone tell me the easiest way to move the Inbox link out of the User's menu to somewhere else on my page (i.e. the top)?

I know that within system_block_user.html it is defined as $block.new_messages but is there a way that I can make this a global variable so that I can use it in theme.html?

I can't find the answer in the docs but if anybody knows otherwise then please send me in the right direction!
