I want to hack at the default XOOPS form editor (the thing I am typing this in now)

What files should I be looking at?

You can start from: class/xoopsform/formdhtmltextarea.php

The script being executed is modules/newbb/reply.php, as is shown in the browser address bar. That script includes modules/newbb/include/forumform.inc.php. Does that help?

I am not actually hacking the BB editor. Mith is helping me out with a new mod, and I want to add spell check. He is using the default editor, and I need to hack it.
