Sending mail to user after registering

Completing the new user registration process was failing so I enabled debugging after which I now get this error:

Call to undefined function: mail()

The box is a Suse 9.1 box and has sendmail on it. So the defaults should work? Shouldn't they? The mail() function what is it a part of? What does it need to work properly?

If anyone can shine any light on this it would be appreciated.
