chmod is the *nix command to set permissions on a file or folder.

Usually you would change those permissions with an ftp program if you dont have shell access on your server.
(which you won´t have in shared hosting environment)

Just google for an explanation ... there are plenty on the web. Here is one for example:

http://docs.cs.byu.edu/docs/linuxpermissions/2.php

or this one:http://www.htmlite.com/php042.php

So it actually depends on who needs what access to a file.
Are you looking for permissions for a specific module or for XOOPS basic installation?

I've installed using fantastico and am trying to update to 2.07 . I've tried a complete manual install in the past and am told that a bunch of necessary files aren't writeable even though my hosting provider says they are. I'd like to give XOOPS a try, but it never quite works right.

here is what I'm trying to do:

!!EXTRA UPGRADE INSTRUCTIONS!!
Please apply the patch as ususal, overwriting the original files with the ones from the patch. Please use your FTP application to make the mainfile.php file in your site root folder temporarily writable (chmod 777).

So you take your FTP program and have a look at the file properties of mainfile.php and change those permissions to 777. (they normally would be 444)
