Can i get rid of this as my front page will be "read only".

I will not be using the register facility of it

Yes....

You'll need to set your System Admin--> Groups permissions to reflect Anonymous such that the blocks that are shown match those you wish people to have access.

Check out my sites (below) and you can see the result.

You may also perform some module control by setting Systems Admin--> Modules such that modules you wish to remain hidden do so.

your sites are interesting, how you get new blocks at LHS to show various other options

its ok i see now, its links to various sites which i guess you added to the block via html

The left hand side makes use of a module called MultiMenu for links. The top menus are Flash. If you want to see examples of how some of this is done you may go to my Downloads and download the Silver theme, it may provide you with some ideas.
