Since:

My japanese is not the best, so I had some problems reading the readme.txt. Maybe I've overseen something during installation.

When I open piCal from the mainmenu-link I receive the following error:

Couldn't open file ''{SKINPATH}/spacer.gif'' for reading in template /usr/local/httpd/htdocs/testing/modules/piCal/images/default/monthly.tmpl.html line 1

Any hints for me?

I can't understand such error occurs.
Do you use another modules using patTemplate?

If not, I can only guess that the problem caused by file broken.

Yes, you were right! A file was broken during deflating the gz. Thanks a lot!

Now this one is an error for sure!

Special characters are not displayed correctly.

Käsekuchen will be displayed as K?sekuchen

Did you guys get piCal to show the fields (english)to show correctly? Seems there's something wrong with the language file, or am I being Stupid? Looks like a very nice module.

Perhaps, this trouble is not caused by piCal's bug but an incompatibility among versions of PHP.
piCal works fine in any languages under PHP 4.3.3.
Tell me your PHP version.

I cant' complain. Module is working perfectly under PHP 4.1.0 register_globals ON in german AND english.
