I think I posted in the wrong forum earlier, have some questions...

I can't seem to change what show up on my start page, and I can't update my site name it it just blank, no matter how often I save new settings.

Also, I can't install any themes, they won't show up.

Did you install using the 'fantastico' installer with your hoster? If so, search for 'fantastico' in the forums and you'll find a couple threads where people have had this issue (about the site name).

If this doesn't apply to you, please provide some additional information about your system/setup/versions etc so people here can help you out...
