My enviro is quite similar, exept of the mySql:
FreeBSD 4.7 + Apache 1.3.33 , PHP 4.3.4 , MySQL 3.23.58
and all is fine on my dev server (mandriva + MySql 4.1.1.
Php debug gives this:

I thought it was an incompibility with MySQL 3.23.58
I had upgraded to MySql 4.1.1 and problem still exists,
but it exists just when trying to add a link from the
admin, If I loguot to add as anonimus - all is working fine
