I just took a look at your site. Looks like you're on the right track.

As for the simple home page, you can set the "Module for your start page" tp "none". Then you can add blocks (and custom blocks) and set them to only show on the top page.

I just blew away my very first XOOPS site and have begun redoing it. That is how I've set it up. You can see it at www.dconline.org. Not much content yet (really only the front page is done, minus the menu system that I still need to implement), but you can see what I'm talking about.
