Ok, Go into XOOPS admin, go to the XOOPS module admin, and then click on the update icon for the news module. This will update the templates and clear the template cache at the same time.

ok, did that, but the "on 2009/3/4 1:10:00 (0 reads)" still appears :(

Is this on the actual article? Wait I might have to look to see that it has not been used elsewhere, for example in the categories etc.

That is the one that I removed. I will go check it again for you and make sure there are no other ones in that file.

I found it. A file called news_item.html that was in the theme director. It had the same line in it. Once I deleted the line it stopped showing the date and number of reads

Themes overriding templates does not seem good idea. What if module developers upgrade their templates? Maybe the core should have an option to enable or disable template overriding. Problems like this would be easier to detect and solve.

I personally would like to see an end to templates within modules altogether, but some might not agree with me. But, yes, this overriding template is not a good method and should be discouraged.
