Work on Xoops Engine, our "next generation" XOOPS architecture, continues!
Xoops Engine, as the new brand name for this new architecture, supports open and extensible engines with its multi-engine design. As for now there are three engines available:
- Xoops: the official engine with new architecture utilizing Zend Framework as the primary library and Smarty 3.0 as the default view templating engine, as well as some third-party libraries like jQuery. Demo will be hosted on www.xoopsengine.org;
- Lite: a lite version of the 'Xoops' Engine with no MySQL required, aimed for high performance scenarios;
- Legacy: for backward compatibility to support legacy XOOPS modules and templates.
Some selected features that were most requested by the community are now part of Xoops Engine:
* Built-in cache mechanism for high performance
* Clear MVC with AOP and event hook
* Extensible URL rewrite for better SEO
* App/module clone w/o code change

From the big news, we would like to congratulate Nicolas (ForMuss) the arrival of his little son! Congratulations to you and your family. I hope, you'll email us soon the promised pictures!

This was probably one of the most exciting times for XOOPS in years! Two major milestones have been achieved - we've released XOOPS 2.5.0 Final and X3 Xoops Engine Alpha! The work is now focusing on X3 as our future platform. Also last month, we had tons of new themes, thanks to Algalochkin, and our new designer: Agadirna.

But as always, as the first thing in each newsletter we wanted to express our gratitude to all of you who have donated money to XOOPS Foundation! We truly appreciate your trust and support! This month there was only a one donation, which is kind of disappointing.

It looks that the majority of people are back from vacation, as the activities in the XOOPS world picked up. Several important things happened in July, of which the most important was the release of XOOPS 2.4.5. DJ (aka phppp) also published the XOOPS Core Development Updates. Algalochkin showed us that there are many cool sites being built XOOPS using his themes, and Insraq shared with us some really cool new themes!!!
It's also nice to see that the number of XOOPS fans on Facebook is growing very rapidly after Rune added a "fan button" to XOOPS Website.
We had some heated discussions, but the most important thing is that people are stepping forward and doing things for XOOPS! There are more focused activities (e.g. Blue Move), and more tangible results! It's been refreshing to see more collaborations, more support, more help, more willingness to make a difference. I had a sense in the last few weeks that people are more willing to work with each other, that there is more teaming going on! And this is exactly what will help XOOPS move forward! A special thanks to everybody who is helping!!!

June was a little slower month for us, but that's normal as vacation time is coming However, work on 2.4.5 release is going forward, with DJ personally working on finalizing the release. The final version should be released early next week. The important news for us was that XOOPS continues be downloaded in high numbers (the last version 2.4.4 already 40,000 times), and that we are being used to power some new important Websites, like the one for SHPE 2010 National Conference. Also very encouraging are the new activities around the world - with new designs for XOOPS Turkey and XOOPS Bosnia/Herzegovina, new banners for XOOPS France, and XOOPS Germany now being accessible via mobile phones. The International XOOPS Community is what makes XOOPS innovative and let us grow!
Unfortunately, our recent contest for XOOPS Articles was not successful - there were no entries We've extended the deadline to July 30th, so please help us out with some cool articles.

Is April we received the sad news that Dutch court dismisses our claims against Herko Coomans. They didn't say that we were wrong in our claims, but only that our XOOPS Foundation didn't show the court that it was the right party to sue. While we're evaluating a possible appeal, our work on XOOPS goes forward. Most importantly we have released our 2009 XOOPS Annual Report so you can see that we keep our financials in a transparent and correct fashion. Also Eduardo Cortés released his cool module framework: RMCommon Utilities.
