Bootnewage CPanel theme (Beta release)

I am happy to introduce a new CPanel (Admin) theme for XOOPS, completely rewritten with Bootstrap, in order to provide visibility and compatibility with different mobile devices.

It is important to stress that unfortunately, with versions of XOOPS 2.5.x that support Bootstrap, this Admin theme may not work properly. Therefore this Beta version should be tested first locally, before using it in a production site.

I have changed many file in the System module, in addition to many other Core files, so it is necessary to do the tests on a fresh installation of XOOPS on your localhost, because if there is incompatibility with this new code, you're not risking anything.

However, even the Default theme will be changed, to avoid any problems.

This below is a screenshot of the theme that can be modified in various colors just like the default theme.

As I wrote in this thread for some problems, you might find difficulty with some features.

I must point out that in the package there are other themes, in addition to the default, but they are not complete like this one. You can still edit them to your liking in the expectation that we can use in production.

Preface
This whitepaper is to describe the process involved in defining Amazon's EC2 with Elastic Load Balancing with the XOOPS Portal System. It is designed to be used with XOOPS 2.5 or later, and the associate files are provided as per GNU licensing of the source. ELB or Elastic Load Balancing within Amazon's EC2 cloud, is the process, where an ELB service will start up as per requirement instances of a website image supporting your website.

When ELB is in place, the Amazon cloud will start up and direct traffic to multiple instances of your website as per the traffic requirement of the site. This all depends on what sort of instances you are using and its capabilities. All the files provided have been tested and are designed to be used with Amazons Ubuntu services.

This sort of service will be required with a site that has a heavy traffic requirement that a single VPS or Private server cannot cope with and when you need multiple services. Why would you use Amazon to do this, well I will quote Peter from ICE Systems on this that ELB services until Amazon made them available where finitely unaffordable and out of reach of even the most durable business intake. As the costs of installing and hosting the services manually where just unjustifiable for most businesses.

This white paper will concentrate on the XOOPS system itself and preparing the CMS/Portal system for the Amazon EC2 environment with ELB in place, some of the systems it describe you will either have to research or employ someone like ICE systems to deploy for you as they contain information which may vary between installations and environment as well as being outside the scope of the documents description.

Anything which is unique to the system this was designed on due to intellectual property rights have been omitted there will be notation in the document as designed or put in generalised terms of reference for use in your own systems.

JQuery UI datepicker

Some time ago on my site, we talked about inserting a plugin datetimepicker that you can insert into a class on xoops. In this news I announce that I have created a special class in the folder class/xoopsform as formdatepicker.php. The result is being able to delete many files from the old calendar, and use a simple method call using the id #datepicker and using the datepicker plugin of jquery datepicker.js

Solving ajax giving cross-domain error or responding empty

When assigning XOOPS_URL to a javascript variable in eighter preloads or specific pages.

Most often the browser will deny your request and return only an empty respond. But not give error. This can be seen in FireBug's console when the requests is returning code "200 OK" but text is in red color = empty result. Very annoying

The problem is between Xoops Cookie and browser. I noticed this when being logged in to a xoops page and closing the page without logging out. When re-opened the ajax running in my preloads (in this case XIM and Smallworld) was denying sending messages or posting to the wall.

Also this is a problem if you log out from http://domain.com and open http://www.domain.com.

There are as I see this 2 solutions.

1) Everytime you finish browsing do log out.

Another solution is to define the javascript var used in ajax requests according to actual browser adress.

Add a function to your page (if you add to include/functions.php remember to include this page in preloads or the page your working on)

The var smallworld_url will now be according to your browser adress and this way not result in ajax cross-browser error.

In the previous version, I included only three classes in the package, it will include 19 excluding of course the form tag we already use with classes xoopsform. It can then use these classes directly in xoops since I added the needed files from libraries that attract the same classes in the core.

A new test for creating a personalized homepage directly from the System Administration. This new version allows you to store images and text in the database for display on the homepage. Ability to enable and disable options for editors such as HTML, smiley, xcodes, images, break, and various editors to manage content in different parts of the homepage.

Create a table so the homepage, find the sql file attached to the zip package, make a backup of the affected files and then overwrite them.

ADODB 0.24 - Advanced Database Performance Enhancement

ADODB is a PHP library available from sourceforge, this is not to be confused for the PHP Extension ADODB they are too seperate things. There is of course a major bottle neck in the current database library where this patch will improve performace upto 1000% with XOOPS 2.3, XOOPS 2.4 & XOOPS 2.5.

It has been awhile coming and we will have some benchmarking for you in the next day or two we are currently running the tests on our Blade Server with 16Gbs of Memory which has minimal load to get an accurate respository of exactly how ADO Db performs in the XOOPS Classes.

To install this simply download the files and replace them in the directory tree class folder.

Xoops Global RSS Hack/Solution

This is a modified version of backend.php, that offers one way of gathering rss feeds from every module that you'd like and displaying them.

All you have to do is replace the backend.php file with the one in the download package.

Add a file in the modules folder /incude/rss.inc.php

The function name must be modulename_rss()

There is an example of the calendar module and smartsection in the package as well.

It actually works like the search functionality works in xoops but you dont have to change or declare anything on xoops_version.php of each file.

I did that cause i didnt want to change any module core files for it to work.

I have also updated the system_rss.html template (you dont need to (for it to work) but it is included in case you prefer the new one)

If anyone else implements this please share the files for other modules too and send them to me so i can include them in the package.

Adding Facebook's Comments Box to XOOPS News Module

Bigwolf asked recently about where to add Facebook's Comment Box code in the News module. Here is a quick tutorial how to hack the News module to make it happen: 1) You need to create a Facebook Application for your XOOPS site, and fill out all the fields there: Make sure that your URL ends with "/" 2) Once you properly fill out the form, and click on the "Create App" button, Facebook wants to make sure that you're a real person or a very smart bot: 3) Once you pass the security check, you'll see your Settings Page with your Application ID and Application Secret: 4) Now go to the Facebook Social Comments Website. Fill out the form with your data: your Website URL, number of default comments to be shown, and how wide should be the comment box, which will depend on your theme that you're using: (Please note: you can change the settings later in your code) 5) Click on the "Get Code" button, and get your code: //begin of correction 6) Go to the file news_article.html located in the /templates directory in your News module, and place your code close to the end of the file, right before:

This is CKEditor for XOOPS 2.5 & and upgrade for 2.4, in the orginal release the jquery adapter was never implemented which meant it was not possible to use JSON or AJAX to retrieve or set the value of the editor with Javascript.

This is CKEditor 3.5.1 with JQuery Support, You can read here for more information on this.

Simply replace the files in your existing 2.4 series or upload to XOOPS 2.5 and you should have CKEditor 3.5.1 running all fine.

This was developed for formuss who could never find a way of using JQuery with the editor, I would like to congradulate him on his new bubba!!

This is a replace for the XoopsFile object that allows for files to be uploaded without refreshing the page. That means you can recieve a file before the form is submitted.

This is good for any preview environment that offers a wide range of options for the environment where you are recieving the file.

If a file is successfully uploaded the form object returns a path and filename for the file.

Hi,

there are some webmasters still using XOOPS 2.2 even though XOOPS 2.4.5 has been released. And this is because of something that is only in XOOPS 2.2: Displayname.

So I've created this hack which will let you add Displayname to your website.

This hack support english and persian languages and was tested on XOOPS 2.4.

Here is a direct download link from the Persian XOOPS support site.

Just extract it into the Root of your XOOPS Installation and go to this address :
yourwebsite/SyncLN.php

After updating your profile module you'll have a Displayname in your site.

now you can activate the block random pictures from your admin panel (extgallery_block_random.html)
and change the size from the skin.css, if you want.

What is Xoops reCaptcha?

Xoops reCaptcha is class that will allow users to add and use reCaptcha widget to prevent spam being posted on their website.

This class can be used in conjunction with the Xoops Captcha or it can replace it all together, with just few lines of code.

While this class can be utilized by anyone, it is aim more at Xoops developers wishing to add reCaptcha to their code.

The class is cleanly written and has developer comments to help aid you in it's usage and there is also documentation within the package that will explain how to add the required calls to make it work.

For its usage, you will be required to create a private and public key and these can be entered one of two ways (Again, this is explained in the documentation).

Xoops reCaptcha, can be used in two ways, either within XoopsFormclass or statically through its own API and methods.

There are examples of its usage within the documentation.

Xoops reCaptcha v1.00 is beta and should not be considered ready for a production website, but used to help with further development.

While I have tried to make this as easy to use as possible, it is not for total beginners. If you require help with this class, I am sure people at the Xoops forum will only be to glad to help out.

This xoCode extension allows you to show the latest tweet of a twitter user.

How to install this xoCode extension?
1. Download [THIS] archive.
2. Extract it to a local folder.
3. Upload the contents of the "htdocs" folder to your XOOPS root directory.

- You can change the styling of the Latest Tweet div in the htdocs/class/textsanitizer/lt/lt.css file.
- If you have installed other extensions like the "Acronym" one please read the "MANUAL INSTALLATION" section below.

How to use this xoCode extension?
You can place the [lt]twitter-username[/lt] tag in any xoCode enabled field (like the signature field of your profile). If you place [lt]XOOPS_forums[/lt] in a xoCode enabled textfield this would display the latest tweet of the twitter user "XOOPS_forums".

First we need to create a directory in CLASS/TEXTSANITIZER new folder and call it "acr". In it are two files:

The first is "index.html" which serves as a basic protection against such intrusions. You can find it in virtually all other directories and it is sufficient merely to copy the new directory.

Hi, "Lorem Ipsum Generator" from Runeher is useful module for all web designers. But now more useful

I translate module to Czech language (module don't use language files) and added "nicer style" to option menu.

Why hack? Because this module don't use Language files but all text are "hard" in source code.

In to the Czech version I added Czech version of Lorem Ipsum, with diacritic and Czech like words. On English version are only original languages, but English speaking people don't need Czech like texts

Comment system for any module

One day I was making a module that would benefit from having comments. I started to look into it but every road seemed a dead end. I started ask around but nobody thought it was possible since the module didn't use SQL.

I almost gave up and started looking into flat file comments, but then Culex took the case and wrote a code that lifted the spirit... So after a few weeks of a lots of testing, failing, testing, and modification it finally works!

A comment hack intended for my module is now available to XOOPS community. It is in a form of a module NoComments, that has been modified so it's has a Comments system included.

The hack is very easy to add to your module. Just follow the instructions in the module and you should be good to go!

As a matter of fact we think this hack is so cool that we included a zip file in the module itself, so if you install it on a live site, you can offer it as a download from your own site.

Most kudos go to Culex as he is the genius behind this... I was more of the the 'nagger'..

Array $pismenka[] include list of characters, who module use, simply use your national characters.

Hack is tested in Xoops 2.4.2 and 2.4.2 in UTF-8.

Hello guys!

To get your site a bit more in the christmas/holidays mood, I've added some snow on my websites, and since everyone likes some snow this time of the year, here is how to do it yourself

This way doesn't require any module or hack and gives a nice effect (similar effect can be seen on my blog http://www.vampiretrix.com - same script but other config)

Download the files from http://www.nightquest.me/snow/snow.zip . Extract them and upload them to your site. (I uploaded them into root/snow).

Open /script/snowstorm.js and search for the line

and type in front of the image/snow the location of the files in your XOOPS installation (so, http://www.my.site/snow/image/snow in my case).
Save this and upload it to your site. (you can also modify general settings in this script, like if the snow should follow the mouse).

Then, go to your site, log in to the admin and open your blocks (http://www.my.site/modules/system/admin.php?fct=blocksadmin) and scroll down to "Add a new block". Change visible in to "All Pages", give it a random name (I named it Snow). Add this to the content:

Change the http://www.my.site/snow/script/snowstorm.js to your site and change the group access and select all groups. Then press submit.

. If people click that link, the snow will stop falling.

Language problem with comments

The Websites are quite often criticized that the authors of programs or other systems do not consider a different language than their own. So different numbers are displayed correctly in the original language, but in other languages they appear strange.

For example, if the original module is able to distinguish only one or more comments, it's a problem, as the translation results in: "Pocet komentaru: 3" instead of the correct "3 komentare" (Examples are given for the Czech language).

For my server, I adjusted the News module as follows:

Modification work will begin immediately, but if you have enabled the cache, it needs to first be erased, otherwise the change will take effect after the flush.

This hack is tested on Xoops 2.4.1 with News module version 1.63

And as always, finally talk about modifying the system: before any treatment can make backup copies of the original files. You never know what can go wrong where.

This is a hack to xoops 2.3.3 which gives you the ability to add a watermark to images that you upload through the image manager.

The name of your watermark should be watermark.png and it should be located under uploadsâ¦ /uploads/watermark.png. Replace the files located in the zip file with the files in your Xoops installation.

Ajax block for the News module

Hi All,

I recently integrated jquery with the news module to create a new block. The new block makes a Ajax calls using jquery to refresh the news by filtering on the topics available. The block is based on the existing "recent news" block, so I have been able to utilize the code for that block to make development quicker.

This is my first stab at jquery integration so I am sure that there will be future releases with more polished code. Feedback will be appreciated.

Delete your temporary files in a easy way

From Hispaxoops & Celseven, we launch a little hack to help users with cache files deletion.

ItÂ´s a code implementation over Xoops called xDelCache, it deletes smarty_compile folder content & create an index.html file again.

If you need a fast way to delete it, we think this one more right way to do.

jQuery's Quick Comment Hack allow your site's visitors to post comments from article page directly.

Quick comment box will display at the bottom of the article instead of Post Comment button.

Installation:
1. Download jquery.js file ( click here ), then upload it to modules/news/js folder.

2. Add this line to your theme.html between <head> and </head>:

This is a complete conversion of the main language files for the elven language you can enjoy your xoops in Elven. If you need a dictionary or a guide we can provide one to you please use our liaise form so you can continue to develop modules in elven.

I know I have travelled around and have noticed that people in some circles or another use this language to communicate and also have meetings in it.

The official smiley database has been published in the wiki, this is as a guide for smiles when you are extending your smiley database in xoops, I would love to one day see xoops have these all natively but I am unsure who should render them all.

Well as you may have noticed I have been doing some examples in the wiki for .htaccess this is for primarily SEO Clean Paths for xoops, the modules I have chosen for the example in sharing this code is code for CBB (1.5, 2.2, 3.x), News 1.4+ (May work on earlier), myalbum-P, SmartSection 2.2, CatAds & the userinfo.php page.

What I have been doing over the last few weeks is testing various SEO paths to see what brings ultimate traffic, remember in changing your websites URL you may get sandboxed for a few months as the search engine detects a sitewide change.

Search Engine Optimization is an important step in making friendly paths for both Search Engines and the End Users, you normal for example use a dash (-) not an underscore (_) to SEO as this is detected and more compatible with a search engine algoritms, it is also helpful for natural language query.

You may also find various other SEO improvements you can make to stop keyword stuffing (Example Titles to Keywords) and so on my wiki profile page (these are deep in the forums).

Remember these SEO paths will increase traffic and delievery into your search engines, you must use a 301 Permanently Moved Redirection as this will remove the old link from the search engine and replace it with the new one.

The general rule for an SEO path is to contain something to do with the title, area of the site and category, remember to include at least the item identification number if possible for legal reasons.

SEO is a big step in improving the cleanliness of your site, as well as your image, we will be doing this here at xoops.org in the not to distant future.

I donÂ´t know if this will work for everyone, I just want to share what I experienced with this code, IÂ´m not by any means any expert or so, but if work for me perhaps it will work for others, other wise just let me know what do you think

To increase the speed of my site i just do as follow:
I use php_speedy, upload to my xoops folder install it and just include the suggested code to my index.php and it reduced the http request by 300%, correct me please if IÂ´m wrong but from 83 request to just 22 and the average front page load time from 76.57 seconds to 28.49 seconds in a 56k connection is a good improvement,of course nothing is perfect and I had to sacrifice an slideshow, for one or other reason did not like php_speedy.

XoopsEditors Compatibility Issues â Fixed

For the longest time, I have been trying to understand the workings of the XoopsEditors. I am not a beginner with PHP or the workings of Xoops, but for the longest time, this issue has bugged me really bad, to the point I wanted to pull my hair out (what is left of it anyway) and I nearly gave up many times. Persistence and brute ignorance are two of my many flaws, but they have seen me through.

Anyway, back to the XoopsEditors. While in the process of revamping WF-Channel, I was asked many times to include a WYSIWYG Editor and after much thought about it I decided to go down the XoopsEditors path. So doing what most other people doâ¦ I started to look for examples on how it works and how I could incorporate it into WF-Channel.

Xcgal users will be familiar with the "Upload more pictures" function which allows up to four pictures to be uploaded in one go and will know about xcgal's "click on a keyword" search function which locates all pictures having the chosen keyword. Keywords are therefore a really important tool for xcgal users.

Unfortunately, users will also know that keywords cannot be entered for pictures uploaded using the "Upload more pictures" function - they can only be added by editing the picture later.

...... until now

I've amended two xcgal files (db_input.php and xcgal_uploadmore.html) to allow keywords to be entered using the "Upload more pictures" function and the time of upload.

I've packed the amended files and their (renamed originals - it will be obvious!!) into this zip file.

I always have problem with the text in the description area of xcgal module, if you write a long description and do not take care of the breal lines your ouput text will result in a long text line, so I modify the template xcgal_display.html and around the line #29 look for a code like this:

and proceed to change to this one:

As you see we change the nowrap for wrap, that makes the trick at least in my case, hope it will solve the problem for another xooper

Have you ever noticed how some programmers have been witting spam bots that automatically sign up to your website. They signup with usernames like newz002344 and so on, this is an implementation of Captcha, that prevents bot and only humans from signing up.

All you have to do is unzip into the root of your xoops installation and CHMOD 775/777 the path /uploads/_captcha_tmp/

This required GD2 Library to be installed and utilises one of the better turning keys for registration.

It is more of a security patch! It has been tested on xoops 2.0.14 - 2.0.16, unsure if compatible with later versions.

Xoops Comments - Prevent Anonymous User Spam

Although there is option in every module that would let you choose who can post a comment. But what if you want anonymous users to post comments as well. There isn't any option (at least I couldn't find any) that will prevent anonymous users from spamming. So this hack will prevent spam if a url\link is found in anonymous users' post.

As always recommended while playing with hacks, make sure you backup the file you will be editing. In this case its: XOOPS_ROOT_DIR\Include\comment_post.php

Note: I have tested it only on Xoops 2.0.16

Start...

1) Open XOOPS_ROOT_DIR\Include\comment_post.php

2) Look for the following on line 138

Everybody knows 'Hidden Content' in Vbulletin forums. Now we can use it in XOOPS. It is very very easy.

File: class/module.textsanitizer.php
We add only a few lines in our module.textsanitizer.php then we can use Hidden Content in news, newbb, sections etc. modules.

Now you must find these lines in module.textsanitizer.php

Photo & Profiles Hack for Xoops 2.0.x

Although this may dissapoint many users, I have to inform you that as from November 2006, I will no longer continue to maintain the Photo & profiles hacks for XOOPS.

I will endeavour to try & support existing installations of it, and will continue to offer it for download.

But I will not be making anymore updates to the hack, including core updates when the next versions of XOOPS are released.

My reasoning for discontinuing this hack is mainly due to lack of time and the fact that there are now better options available.

I highly recommend the use of Formulize 2.2 module along with the registration codes hack, created by Freeformsolutions.ca, with both these installed you can easily customise your profile pages whenever you require + a whole lot more..

A simple hack to add extra security to your site and prevent malicious users from entering false email addresses. This checks with the mail server entered by the user to see if the mail address exists.

1) download the checkmail.zip file from HERE and extract its contents and put them into the class/ directory of your xoops installation

2) backup the /include/functions.php file

3) edit the /include/functions.php file and replace the current function declaration:

That's it. Now try to register using a dummy email. It will be refused. It will also check if you allow users to change their email addresses.

This works on Linux servers. The code includes functionality for Windows servers but I haven't tested it on them.

CrystalHack is a xoops comments system hack that implements the SecurityImage class by Dugris and a useful new "Username" form field.
With this new field even anonymous users can specify a nickname instead of "Anonymous".

I think that this hack will be very useful especially in blogs and it will allow the webmasters to open Comment functionality to anonymous users
without worrying about spammer.

Introduction
Actually, the few pages availables in the user side of your site(s) does not always offer a significative page title.
That's a problem because significatives pages titles, meta keywords and meta descriptions can help you to have better places in search engines results pages.

XFG (Xoops For Google) is a modified version of Xoops 2.0.13.2 wich add titles to the kernel's pages.
To the default modules wich are provided with Xoops, I have added pages titles and meta keywords and meta description when it was possible.

For memory, the metagen was created by Marcan and Solo.

I have also added, for example purpose, some modified modules.

You will find, later in this article, a complete list of the kernel's pages I have modified and the list of the modified modules.

The goal is not to give you a serie of modified modules but to give you some of them so that you can do it yourself and easily.

What is it?

If you use Mozilla you would be familiar with sidebars if you are not and still use Mozilla then hit F9 and the side bar panel will open. This is a hack which will add another tab to this sidebar panel which will show you

1. The categories and albums of the given xcGal gallery in a tree structure.
2. It has a tiny search form which will allow you to search the gallery
3. It can show the thumbnail of last uploaded picture

It has user setable themes and also the user can set the number of thumbnails she wants to see... This is cookie based and does not take up any server resource. It works with Mozilla 1.0 (and all avian and canine variants), Konq 3.2, Opera6+ and Internet Explorer 5+

How do I install it on my server?
Presuming that you have a working XOOPS and xcGal module setup, Download the sidebar zip file, unzip the contents and just upload all of them in the same folder as your xcGal module files, thats it!!

Once you have uploaded all the files just point your browser at http://yourdomain.com/modules/xcGal/sidebarInstall.php and follow the instructions there. Or you can enable Install Side Bar block, that has all neccessary shortcuts for installation.

Thanks to Mith for revising the code here, and I've also just updated the page timer & MySQL counter smarty plugin so that it works with the new Xoops 2.2.x branch. This plugin allows you to place a single smarty tag in your theme which when executed by the server is replaced with the time taken by the server to generate the page, as well as giving you a total of all MySQL database queries used. If you are installing from new, please just follow the 5 simple installation steps on the next page of this article (also detailed in install.txt file in the download). 1 password is saved with md5 and will not be displayed on pages so there is no security concern when the page is cached.
2 multi-account applicable and you can choose an account to use from a select box
3 to remove an account from save list, just login leaving "save password" checkbox blank

Photo + Profiles Hack V2 for 2.0.13.2

This is an update from my previous hack. there isn't much difference than before in looks or usage except for now the users can enter their date of birth on registration (it is set to be *required*) and on user profile page, instead of showing date of birth it displays the users age.

exisiting members from before the hack was installed, will not have a date of birth, so the next time they visit their profile page, they will have the option of setting it :) after setting their date of birth, the option to edit the dob is removed, essentially, once it's set it can only be changed by admin.

a few new form classes were created with this hack, that may benefit other developers too..

... for those, who had fun with the additional newsblocks ... here is an update, i added some blocks so now there are 6 blocks for different categories of news to display. It works fine with news version 1.1 but should work with 1.3 (but there we have some additional blocks though).

This is a "module" from a theme dabbler and perhaps not the way a coder will do to get similar result. If in doubt, please try on a test page first.

Reynaldo's ShortURLs UPDATED

sim_suin has just released Simplified URLs which is great if you are trying ShortURLs for the first time. But if you have been using the Reynaldo's ShortURLs for a while, it would be just not feasible for the switch without creating a huge mess with search engines.

One of the issues using Reynaldo's ShortURLs is that it systematically converts all URLs including admin URLs. This proves to be problematic and you end up with many white pages in modules admin due to inconsistent coding.

The UPDATED hack utilizes (or borrows ) sim_suin's idea, will exclude module admin and system admin. No more modifying the module admin files in order to get it work. Enjoy!

Simplified URLs Hack

This hack Simplified URLs ,which is based on ShotURLs released by reynaldo, converts Xoops URLs into shorter and static ones that can be indexed by search engines.

How to Install
1) Modify your loadpages.php.
Set your start module's dir name at line 33.
If you don't set a start module, please set it blank like: $start_module = "";
Set the position of "loadpages.php" at line 38.

2) Upload this two files to your Xoops root dir:
- loadpages.php
- simplified_url.php

3) Modify your .htaccess file, the one you have in your Xoops root dir (if any)
and add the contents of the included .htaccess file. If you don't have one, just upload the one I provided.

4) In the Xoops root dir, there is a file named mainfile.php
Open it and add the following line just after the disclaimer (line 41 for
Xoops 2.09):

Got a little distracted this week and as a little side project I have created a smarty insert plugin that displays the page execution time, and MySQL queries generated to render each page. The advantage of using the insert method is that the insert function code is always executed each time it is invoked, and isn't cached in the template along with all the other output data. This meaning that the page timer and MySQL counter figures are always going to be current and relevant to the page being displayed, regardless of if block and/or module cache is active.

The SmartFactory has just published a little hack that suddenly makes my life much easier. Let me explain !

Maybe I'm a bit lazy, but I often don't log to a site unless I need to. This causes an obvious problem : if people send me Private Message, there is a good chance I won't see it right away. Since we live in an 'instantaneous society', I like to receive PM... instantaneously

So I did a little hack allowing users to get notified by mail whenever they receive a Private Message. Of course, this only applies to users who have selected the Email notification method.

Security check for login/register using visual confirmation

A security check plug-in for xoops register and/or login.

How does it work:
1 The system generates a confirm id associated with a random code and stores it in a db table or in xoops_session table.
2 Meanwhile the random code will also be stored in a temporary file containing scripts protect against external scripts execution.
3 An image creation function will read the random code to create the confirmation image.
4 Once submitted, the typed code will be compared with the stored code.
5 An attempt limit is configurable.

With the release of XOOPS 2.0.7.3, I repackaged XOOPS Multilanguages and give you an updated version that will work on XOOPS 2.0.7.3.

As I did with version 1.4.1, I created in the package a folder called XOOPS_2.0.7.3_ ML_1.4.2. This folder contains the files changed from XOOPS 2.0.7 to XOOPS 2.0.7.3, merged with XOOPS Multilanguages. So, if you are upgrading form a previous version of XOOPS Multilanguages, you can copy the content of this folder at the root of your XOOPS site.

As usual, please carefully read the ReadMe file as it is REALLY IMPORTANT. XOOPS multilanguages is not intended to everyone. It is a sever hack of XOOPS. Please handle it with care.

Hack for better search engine positionning

We have realesed a hack for a better positionning in search engine in XOOPS 2.0.6.
We use a news format of URLs like page.php/My-title and we have added the title of the news/posts/files/links in the <title> xhtml tag!
This include a special version of the Spotlight module who use our news URL format and fix many xhtml problems!

Catzwolf updated evennews with many new features.
- being able to specified sending email address instead of admin email
- move hard-coded subscription text/disclaimer into ModuleConfig database

There are several small bugs in it. I failed to get Catzwolf's attention, so I took upon myself and made a few of changes.

fixes
1) enabled MySQL database saving of HTML newsletters with apostrophes
2) specified sending system email address worked, in both creating and sending newsletters
3) fixed message archive viewing in admin (small typo corrected)
4) enabled dropping evennews_members table when uninstalling (small typo in xoops_version)

Still not working:
can't send to specified subscriber group of text or html. Newsletter will go to all subscribers, regardless of the group selected by subscriber when signing up. For now, I have taken out the choice in the sub template and I am sending newsletter strictly in HTML.
Newsletter count of failed and sent does not work.

Catz: I hope you (or someone) would continue to develop this module. This is a great module and it would be great if it could further developed.

Image transparency has been a problem for as long as gif has existed. with png the solution was here. But not quite. Microsoft with their internet explorer (ie) has not bean able to handle png transparency natively. So we all started the big wait and nothing happened. Untilâ¦..

Module with Search in HTML

I am starting in the XOOPS now and therefore I opted to using static pages and deriving data of mysql. First I did not try to use tinycontent, cjaycontent and etc, but it was not what I wanted. Then observing other codes I implemented a module that shows my pages HTML. The problem was when I gave for account that the SEARCH did not function. I looked in several forums. Some said that solution did not exist, others said to use tinycontent and etc. Then, giving for satisfied I did not decide me I myself to implement my SEARCH in HTML. The solution is adopted is simple consists of:

This is a modification of the Articles Module by Andrew Mills.

I have added a block that replaces the XOOPS main menu and allows you to link directly to articles. The idea is that you can create a navigation system that links to the articles and thereby mimic the behavior of a web site that only has static content. This modification does not limit the use of Articles in any way, it adds to it.

xcGallery for XOOPS Multilanguage

I've hacked some files of xcGallery 1.1 to make it work with XOOPS Multilanguage 1.2. Should you find any places left with no multilingo fonctionnalities, please let me know.

Also, if some other modules would need an adaptation to work with the hack, PM me.

After taking a deep look at some modules out there, I decided to write ShortUrls from scratch and slightly change the way it works.

I added 'dynamic' support for other modules so you don't have to wait for me to release a version of the hack supporting your favorite module. This have a lot of advantages but may also have a few drawbacks I may be unware of.

URL Rewriting Mod for Xoops

Inspired by the famous Google Tap mod for phpNuke, I've just finished to implement a ModRewrite for URL rewriting in xoops.

This mod rewrites most important URLs into search engine-friendly URLs, removing query strings which are sources of problems. These rewritten URLs allow bots to crawl your website.
Due to high bandwith consumption with Google Tap and phpNuke (this mod works so well that google bot sometimes crawl 100.000 pages per month !),
I wrote a script which protects your bandwidth by forbidding bot crawling on URLs without your "WWW" subdomain, which is the main source of consumption (However, you may not use this script if you want).

Internet Explorer 5.X CSS Hack For Xoops 2.0.6

This is an updated version of my Internet Explorer 5.X CSS functions.php hack from version 2.0.5.2, and is for use with Xoops version 2.0.6. What this modified functions.php file does is separate pre Internet Explorer 6 browsers from the post Internet Explorer 6 browsers. When a visitor with pre Internet Explorer 6 browser connects they are directed to a CSS file called style_ie5.css, whereas visitors with post Internet Explorer 6 browsers are directed to the standard style.css file. What this means is that you no longer have to make exceptions in you style.css file anymore to get you page looking atleast viewable in both of these major version of Internet Explorer.

To apply this modified functions.php file, download it and place it in your includes folder after renaming the exisiting functions.php file for recovery purposes. From here you'll have to create an extra CSS file in for your theme called style_ie5.css and optimize it for Internet Explorer 5.X usage. I don't forsee any problems with using this, and am using it on one of my own sites at http://www.brashquido.org without any problems.

Here's a way in which you can run multiple xoops instances with 1 simple XOOPS install.

This would be benefitial for those running XOOPS hosting servers. (saves diskspace and you could control caching independently for each XOOPS instance)

Wysiwyg Patch for News module available

Are you tired of using the internal Xoops Editor? Than its time to apply this patch to your news module. It will integrate the Spaw Wysiwyg Editor (needs IE 5.5) in your news module. You can download it in the download section here at xoops.org!

Configuration Settings
- Wysiwyg Editor can be activated for Admin
- Wysiwyg Editor can be activated for User submit
- You can deactivate the linebreak conversion to avoid white space in front of the html code
- Xoops Editor will automatically be displayed, if a user doesn't have IE 5.5

Install Instructions
- If the news module isn't installed yet, install it through the modules administration firstly.
- Overwrite the news module files included in Xoops 2.0.5 with the files in the package
- After that update the news module

This patch doesn't make any changes to the database! Only one class file has changed, in order to display the wysiwyg content correctly.

Hack for wfsection

I've written a hack for wfsection to enable ordinary users to use WYSIWYG editor instead of basic HTML editor. Originally only wfsection admin can use WYSIWYG editor. Also ordinary users can see and edit their pages inside an article list page.

There are some known bugs in this hack:
Documents that uploaded with wfsection, cannot be removed or edited with this hack as ordinary user. But can be edited or deleted with admin as usual. This bug need to be fixed. I'm waiting help to fix this bug.

Headlines Module for DBCS Language Xoops Sites Hack Released

The original Xoops Headlines Module requires PHP's mb_string extension for encoding and decoding DBCS characters to and from utf8, but unfortunately PHP 4.xx version of mb_string extension does not support such conversion other than japanese encoding ! So no RSS news feeds are possible in Chinese Xoops sites.

This hack will make Headlines Module for big5 and gb2312 encoding Xoops sites working again!

If other DBCS language users are interested by this hack, please make your request on my website http://www.guanxiCRM.com, I will try to integrate your language in next releases.

The first hack below is posted by slob realizing the feature that you can add bbcode wherever you click the mouse.
The second is made by me. When you select some text and then click the bbcode button, bbcode [XXX]and [/xxx] will be automatically added before and after the text selected respectively. Also you can add color text or bold text format by the mothod. All you have to do is: selcted the text you want to add format, click the bold ,italic button, or color, and then click add text button.

The bug is, If you set the XOOPS_USE_MULTIBYTES to 1 in the /language/yourlanguage/global.php, then, the "Length of the title" of "Recent Downloads" block, quit work.

Hint: The "Length of the title" of "Recent Downloads" block, can be modified in the [Blocks Administration] Â»Â» [Edit a block].

- Fixed navigation problem with next page if you have many expired articles.

myDownload Module Hack

I am in the process of hacking the mydownload module to enable me to create a book-management module in which I will be able to upload books to my Web site and indicate for each book the versions available and the download module will then display multiple version downloads for each book. Right now, the download module, which I am eventually going to rename myFreeBooks and mySaleBooks will handle books with four static extensions, .pdf, .txt, .htm and .lit. Eventually, there will be between one and five links per title depending on which versions for each book are being supported, and you will be able to select what information is displayed about each book you enter into the database on a per-book basis.

News hack: set expiry date

My first xoops module hack: added the option to set an expiry date to news posts to the Xoops news module.
There are still some small bugs (this IS my first hack, after all ), but you can test it here (use the news admin). You can find the modified news module here, but you need to manually add a db field in your prefix_stories table (int(10),NOT NULL, default value 0) for it to work properly.

If used, the FreeContent module and you are not particularly shoes to you on php or still you do not know well xoops, you will have noticed, than when gone in a page created with this, does not come visualized the menÃ¹ of right and not there are knows to you, that they can help you, at least, if continued to try the problem to the inside of the module.

Ok, you may be asking what is a PN to XOOPS conversion template, well, it copies the core data from Postnuke 7.13x tables to XOOPS RC 3.04 tables. Now, the template thing may be confusing as well. The reason I call it a template is that it's not a full fledged conversion script, just a hack that you can easily use to customize for your particular setup. This script is designed for new (and seasoned) PHP devs with a good SQL background.

This hack is intended to let the user select his own language on the fly. Although the XOOPS engine allows for selecting a default language, it doesn't allow for selecting the language "on the fly". This hack consists of a block which displays a list of flags, or a drop down combo (depending on the settings) with the current available languages. When a user selects a language, the information is stored in a cookie, for the current domain.

NOTE: The language changing is only for the interface! This means the information in the database (news/forums/etc..) will still be displayed in the language that the author used!

For those who wants XoopsBB looks like PhpBB, i've hacked some files of newbb in order to permit user who want to create a topic, to create a polls associated with.

It uses class files of the xoopspoll modules and the text (2 or 3 only) are hardcoded in english in the forumform.inc.php
