NEW FEATURES & ENHANCEMENTS

- Koivi WYSIWYG editor intergration. Your choice of using the default Xoops editor or Koivi editor selectable via AMS preferences. When using koivi editor also has a separate area for the article description as well as the main area for putting your article, so there is no need for use of the [extend] tag anymore.
NOTE: You MUST install Koivi editor seperately before this feature can be used. you can download Koivi from here

- Advanced Spotlight management. Choose your AMS spotlight block layout from three different template layouts, and add unlimited spotlight blocks with the option to display article mini stats including total articles, total article reads and total article comments. The all new spotlight block administration area allows you to configure exactly how and where to display your AMS spotlight item. From here you can add new spotlight items, selecting the latest article, the latest article in a topic, a specific article, or use the custom setting to display an image or banner using straight HTML code. You can also set things such as what image to display, wether to use an auto or manual teaser, how many characters the auto teaser should display, what text a manual teaser should contain, wether to display the spotlight item in the spotlight block or not, and item weighting where the lowest weighted item is treated as the main spotlight item.

- Complete migration and upgrade script. This script enables you to migrate all content, permissions and comments from all presently released version of the News module. It also enables you to upgrade from AMS 2.2.

- View by topic revamped. The view by topic view has undergone a huge overhaul and now presents itself with much more emphasis on navigation via topic and sub-topic.-

- New breadcrumb navigation system viewable in the topic and article views for easier browsing.

- Topics Manger. Topics manager now has a topic weighting system so you can set the listing order when using the view by topic mode.

- Article image selection. You can now select to display the user avatar in addition to the topic or no image when viewing an article.

Downloads do not seem to be working across a number of Sourceforge mirrors, such as Voxel, Aleron and Ibiblio. You might want to look into that.

I look forward to seeing this module. I am presently workng on a Xoops-based news website and this may be a welcome addition to the "Swiss Army Knife".

It takes a little while before the sf.net mirrors are all updated with this file. It was added 5 hours ago, so it is not yet guaranteed to be there.

Alternatively, you can get it from Brash's own site on www.it-hq.org

I have said it before and I will say it again here. The money I donated has been hands down the best investment I have made for my website. This modulde does exactly what I wanted it to do for me. I had been looking across many CMS systems and this one is by far the best.

It's
lame, ugly, buggy, never carefully tested piece of scrap.
Anybody wants facts?! Easy... See here
1. Subtopic "Soft" have image, but it doesn't shown in article (only in this subtopic)
2. Top-most topic is empty. why, goddam?! Check separate subtopics - soft, hard, bad news - they have articles!!! Where are these articles?
3. Where are 10 news on title page?
4. Why old bug (group by topic and 2-columns view) leave intact?!

Resume - AMS 2.41 is (in current form) unusable for big news-sites with wide themes tree (I have only 12 topics, some of which are sub-topics from parent, and 2-level tree only... in real life tree-brances can be longer and wider)

Clarification: "Unusable" with theme grouping and|or multicolumn view.

Thanks for the honest, bordering on spiteful, but none the less wildly inaccurate summation there Lazybager. I am sorry you do not like the module, but the "facts" you present are incorrect and at best only represent your personal opinion (which you're entitled to, but is not fact). I realize English is not your primary language, but if you do intend to so strongly criticize the hard work Mith and myself have put into this then please at least take the time to think about what you are going to say so that it is clear and objective. Calling it "lame, ugly, buggy, never carefully tested piece of scrap" is quite simply incorrect and hardly either clear or objective.

Did you actually set the article to display the topic image? You have a choice of no image, topic image or user avatar image. I have tested this and I get the correct image displayed for each option. In the event the user does not have an avatar the topic image is used.

You said it. Top most topic is empty which is exactly why there are no articles displayed there. Only articles of the specific topic are displayed in the list which is exactly why the articles published in the sub-topics do NOT appear. This is done by design! AMS 2.6 will be incorporating an option where the parent topic displays the most recently published topics from all sub-topics.

Incorrect! www.iis-resources.com for one uses AMS 2.41 and we get in excess of 10,000 page views a day. If you actually bothered to test it you'll see that the topic view only displays a maximum of 2 topic levels, after which it reverts to the standard "classic" view. This is done specifically to prevent the display for getting too wide for sites using topic structures several layers deep.

Granted I really need to lift my game in terms of clear and comprehensive documentation. However it would seem very clear to me LazyBadger that you are giving unfair and inaccurate "facts" without giving any significant time to actually using and testing the module before forming and publishing your opinion.

While I did not find any show stopping bugs, after comparing hervet's news module to this I have to say, from a work efficient standpoint I perfer hervet's news module.

It is obvious the work that went into this but frankly I did not like the way certain admin (lack there of) functions are setup nor the way the module 'feels' while navigating.

Perhaps hervet's module retains the feel more of the default news module and thats why I perfer it.

I do not take away the capabilities of AMS, but it certainly is not the end all, be all. I think it comes down to a matter of taste. I perfer something a bit more familiar and friendly.

No worries Rhomal, there is no doubting Herve has done some outstanding work with the News module. AMS is just another option for users, just as SmartSection and the Articles are very similar (but not exactly the same) it just comes down to a personal taste thing. I'd be interested to know what admin functions are lacking though if you had time?

Gentlemen,

Outstanding work....thank you very much for the contribution. Once upon a time, article management was one of XOOPS weakest areas. Now with News 1.3, AMS, WF-Sections (and others) it is one of XOOPS strongest.

I will bend over backwards to defend a persons right to express their own opinion Lazybadger. However there is a right and a wrong way about doing things, and without a shadow of a doubt the way in which you choose to conduct yourself with your initial comment is the wrong way.

The attitude you displayed in your comments represent the exact reason why people should not even bother making an effort to contribute anything, and is very destructive to the community spirit. AMS 2.41 lost some points of usability for wide audience... and own unique "face" (compared to News 1.3), which it had in 2.2

As an innocent bystander watching this traffic accident unfold I have to say, great response.

I appreciate hearing candid comments about new modules from other members. If there's something wrong with it, you should feel free to post your concerns. But you're right. There's a right way and a wrong way to comment.

A poster looses credibility by publicly trashing others.

I have an idea for a new module. Allow members to create their own personal filter that excludes posts from other selected members?

First and fore most I can edit a article right from the main page. I dont have a wind my way to and though the admin menus to correct a simple spelling error.

Also the new news has had koivi support before AMS.

And it seems less buggy from the reports I am seeing here. Makes me glad I dumped it for the new news module.

I just wish there was a reverse script to port my old news back to the news module from AMS as there was from news to AMS.

You might want to make one so ppl like myself who decide after some use AMS isnt for them are not stuck/forced with it.

I have over 6 months of news I cant afford to loose. (In 2-3 months I can prob uninstall it and kill the AMS news as it will be outdated and the new news module back log will be full enough. But thats not the point)

well they provide a script to migrate from news to ams as it's their module, i think that's enough in my opinion.. maybe a script to migrate from wf-section to AMS could be useful for some??

if you want to convert back to news i think personally that is more a job for the news module team (no disrespect to the news team, i think that's more or less what tends to happen anyway) what i'm saying is usually developers create scripts to convert from other modules to work with their own and not many do the reverse.

well it's obvious in every post you make that you don't like AMS.. AMS outdated?? i think you need to get some perspective as to development.. should it cease to be further developed after time, then fine but please don't make unfounded predictions because you like a different module..

i have no loyalties to either the AMS or news module both have their good points etc and it's hard to choose.. some of my sites use AMS and some use the News module and some use both!

There is an edit link displayed in the article view in AMS, just not the index or topic views. The reason for this is that if the module is cached and the cache is refreshed by an admin user, then the edit and delete links will be displayed to everyone regardless of wether they have admin access or not. These links will stay there until such a time the cache is again refreshed by a non admin user.

AMS 2.4 was released 8th of Feb, and News 1.3RC1 was release on the 12th, not that a difference of a few days should have any bearing on module selection unless you're really pressed for time. News 1.3 does have wider support for WYSISYG editors though, something I hope to rectify in AMS 2.6.

I haven't seen any issues reported with AMS and Koivi (apart from redirect issue in Firefox which is not the fault of AMS) or News 1.3 for that matter.

As AMS is a paid development, I'm afraid you're on your own on that one. I can't justify spending my money, or contributions made by others for further development to create a script to migrate to other modules. If you choose to pay someone to develop one I'd be happy to include it in the main distribution, otherwise you'll have to wait until Herve has time to make one.

Again I am on 2.2, since AMS is no longer my active news module I saw no reason to upgrade to the new version. From what I see in this thread it seems theres some bugs that need to be ironed out.

And I think you need to READ my post again. My ams NEWS will be outdated thus in a few months of building new news I can uninstall it and it will matter not.

Not everyone uses cache.. so its a poorly missed feature to us that dont.

I have been using his module since the 13th. I wasnt following AMS so I really didnt recall/relaize when you were going to relaase the pay version to the public. At the time I saw a module that had more functionality and went for it. I agree its only a week and not a huge issue in the big picture. But at the time I was looking to port over ASAP to something else. So at that time the added features mattered and looked appealing.

i did read ur post twice.. and i apologise for the confusion of mine.. i thought u meant that AMS itself would be outdated compared to the NEWS module, not that you meant just ur version of it. it's your reference to AMS NEWS i thought u were comparing it between both.. as i don't call AMS a news module i call it an article module. again i'm glad u made it more clearer..

AMS 2.2 had some quite severe bugs that have been fixed. There is ONE in 2.41 which as far as I can see has to do with div positioning and padding.

It might have.. I really didnt use it very long to discover them. It worked good enough, but as I stated I didnt like the feel/layout. And I perfered the koivi editor.

But you just proved my point it does have issues and its prob a good thing I am not using it anymore. Thankfully I didnt get suckered into paying for this sub-par thing.

Change the tenor of things around here...

I heve been using AMS since it first came out. I have found that it is well supported by Brash and by Mith. In my own miniscule way, I have also supported it (and would/will do so again - if the critical crowd doesn't kill the spirit of the developers). I like it's features and chose it over news1.3 (which is also an excellent module), though it was close. I have had no complaints from visitors to my site; indeed, they seem to like it as well.

I, for one, am tired of seeing people egregiously criticize releases of this module in particular, and modules in general. It kills the spirit of development and community. If you don't like something, say so politely and specifically, or move on. From where I sit, gratitude, kindness and decency must be part of this community or the community will die.

My thanks to all those who give remarable amounts of time to developing a better xoops...

i think the ridiculing of this particular module should stop too.. i don't know y it seems to drag such ridicule...

and @rhomal, ok so it has a couple of bugs that's fine. it's fine that u don't like how it looks, but i can't understand ur particular ridicule and obsession with the bugs in this module.

ur now using news 1.3, which also has some bugs, i also got errors when installing news 1.3 as have others, but i had no probs installing it on a few different sites. but I don't actually see you ridiculing or complaining about the bugs in news 1.3.. and hervet as said he will make a converter for ams > news over a week ago, so no need to ask brash to make 1 really was there?

i might be wrong, but from my point of view and opinion i just think that you don't like this module at all, but that's not a reason to be flamboyant in your posts regarding this module especially when ur stated basis for not using it is because of some minor bugs, especially when the module you now use also has it's share of the bug line and you don't ridicule that module.

Great work Mith and Brash! I know I asked this awhile ago, but I forgot the response, can you again point out the major differences between the
News 1.3 and this one - beyond the Audience level thing, because I'm not quite sure what that does. I'm going to update to one of these mods this weekend, and I'd like to know what the feature differences are. Although I did see that you took my advice regarding the Reads and Article Stats, which for me is a MAJOR selling poin t for AMS!

Dont get me started again on this. The 'spirit' of open source went out the window with this module long ago.

Or do we need to bring up the fact if you paid for this module, and gave it to others (as you are allowed to do per the GPL legally) brash bans you from his site/downloading any more updates ahead of the public release.

If you going to get on your soapbox the thump on your spirit of open source bible point the fingers where they belong please.

And I did CLEARLY state what my issues with the module are. The bugs are a side issue IMO and I am not the one who ever brought that topic up. Thus I feel I gave my feedback and did all I could. So lets not drown the facts in drama shall we?

This conversation is utter BS. AMS 2.41 is an excellent module. True yes in 2.2-2.4 it had some bugs that needed ironing out, but have you fellas who bash even tried 2.41 (no less donated)? I've had it for a few weeks now (because I donated) and I have zero complaints. It is rock solid.

Of course it did take some testing to get to know the system but Dom has always been more than helpful, going beyond what I asked on more than one occasion to give me direction.

Now with these personal jabs that are being thrown I cannot understand. If those who choose to bash AMS 2.41 specifically, I will take them to task. Feature for feature. You may bash 2.4 or even 2.2 (why not start a forum thread elsewhere why you do not like those versions).

Leave 2.41 out of this.

If I may make one suggestion Dom, hold back the major releases for continuing donors (i.e. 2.2-2.4-2.6) but release the bug fix versions (i.e. 2.41) to the public sooner. That way the whackos who choose to bash a free module won’t have time to load up their ammo.

On the flip side, so it does not seem I am being overly critical, I do congratulate you for at least starting to get koivi and other advanced editor support started.

I had to go to Herve to help me insert his editor into a different module as that module creater gave some paranoid security speal about why he wont tell those on his forums how to insert a non-DHTML editor into his module.

I think koivi should become the default editor for XOOPS and Herve deserves much credit for all his hard work. But thats another topic.

None the less I think this is certainly the way to go, adding more advanced editor support (for this and IMO all modules), and on that level I give AMS credit and tip my hat for your foresight.

The articles are still in the MySql, so I'm wondering if the call to the articles might be corrupted somehow.

If this is an update from AMS 2.2 did you run the update scripts as per the UPGRADE.txt file in AMS root directory? If not you will need to do this as there are several modifications to existing tables and a new table needs to be created for the Spotlight data. Also, if you are using custom templates you will need to regenerate them.

Thanks for the suggestion Kainaij , and in a perfect world scenario that would definitely work. Actually, in a perfect world scenario I wouldn't have to stage releases at all as people would donate toward what they use (not just AMS but for all open source).

Unfortunately this is just not realistic. I've just done a breakdown of all AMS donations to date, and the results show that small donations are vital to the future of AMS unless I can snare some businesses into footing the bill. Some facts about donations to date;

- More than 83.6% of all AMS donations are $20 or less.

- The Net sum (after Paypal fees) of all donations of $20 or less make up over 54.8% of all donated AMS funds (excluding initial development funds).

- Between www.it-hq.org and Xoops.org there have been 4593 downloads of AMS (both version) at the time of writting this. That is a contribution to download percentage of 1.3% (not taking into account several people who have contributed mulitple times).

What you can see from this is that if I did not stage the releases as I do, then the need to make a contribution would be removed and AMS would become underfunded to the point where we'd probably only be able to make one release a year. Not saying that all people making these smaller donations are doing so just because it is the only way to get early access to AMS (I know a lot also contribute because they can see the wider benefits to the XOOPS community), but they would certainly make up a decent percentage.

I am considering some changes for the release schedule for future versions, but I am still to sort out the details. The same basic structure of paying to get early access to new versions and priority support will still be used though. I'm not really that concerned if these "whackos" approve of this method or not, and believe that anyone who does oppose it is either doing so for self centered reasons (wanting everything for themselves at someone elses cost) or just not seeing the big picture (by choice or otherwise). All arguments against the way AMS is developed to date have been VERY shallow, and those that aren't I have had solid reasons for not using.

I do not use AMS but have read this thread with interest. I think that Brash has utilized a method of getting a module developed to fit his needs that also makes it's way to the rest of us for free...what's wrong with that? It appears as though the criticism must be rooted in this?

If I, as a "non-developer", am in need of a module to fit my needs exactly what are my options?

1.I could foot the bill myself and release it to the community free of charge. A very nice thing to do but I am sure my wife would not allow that to come to fruition.

2. I could do what Brash does and spread the cost across multiple people that have the same need and release it to the community free of charge at a later date...probably in the same amount of time that would elapse in the above scenario.

3.The most common scenario is that the module never comes to be as the criticism, time, money and effort are just not worth it.

Brash - I would just continue on doing what your doing and know that the people not saying anything are the ones that agree with your approach and appreciate what you and Mith have done. Don't waste your time!

It looks like RSSFit 1.1 has just been released from www.brandycoke.com and there is an AMS plugin included in the extra plug-ins download. Pretty excited about this module as Jeff and Myself from IIS-Resouces and Stefanos from www.karagos.com (same guy who sponsored AMS 2.41) paid Tuff to make some pretty major changes to RSSFit (it is about 80% new code). This is another module that is paid for by those who had need for it and is now released to everyone to use free of charge .

STILL NOT WORKING

Following instructions for install from upgrade.txt document.

I log in on mydomain as admin.

I point to mydomain/modules/AMS/upgrade.

I get a small three row box called upgrade.

I selected the bottom choice to upgrade the AMS, because I'm not using NEWS module cross to AMS.

I get error message

Failed creating table xoops_ams_spotlight.
Failed updating table xoops_ams_topics.

Proceed - I click on this

I then get the upgrade module box, which I click on and get the listing of upgraded files.

I click back to homepage and then click on Menu for Articles.

I get a blank screen with address line reading

mydomain.com/modules/AMS/

Sorry I'm just swamped so I haven't had enough time to really get into the module and work through this.

I'm sure it's something simple I've missed.

I'd appreciate any thoughts on this.

Do you have any sort of MySQL admin tool (PHPMyAdmin , etc) you can use to look at the structure of your AMS database tables? First step we need to do is to ensure that the xoops_ams_spotlight table has actually ben created. Until we can be sure that the new xoops_ams_spotlight has been created and the xoops_ams_topics has been modified then the upgrade just isn't going to work.

Lemme get this straight (just clarifying):

1. You login to your site
2. You go to www.example.com/modules/AMS/upgrade/index.php
3. You select "Update Article Management System Module"

and get this error? I don't understand it... it IS using a POST request.

However, you should be able to get it going by manually applying the ALTER TABLE and CREATE TABLE queries via a tool like phpmyadmin.

Still don't understand why you experience this.

I'm jumping in late on this one and have not read the entire discussion, but isn't that error message the standard thing that the xoopsDB query method returns, but that method can fail due to a referrer check as well as things coming from GET? Could this be a referrer problem?

Here is how the upgrade.txt file reads:

UPGRADING INSTRUCTIONS:

Upgrade from AMS 2.2
1) Upload all files in this package - overwrite existing files
2) Log in to the site
3) Point your browser to modules/AMS/upgrade
4) Select "Update module" - you will be passed on to the module administration's update, but an update script will have run prior to that, so it is important not just going to modules administration and then updating (this is a one-time database update, so if you update the module later, e.g. after changing the templates, you will not need to update the module through here)

In order to import topics, articles, permissions, comments and attachments from an existing News module
1) Log in as administrator to the site
2) Go to [yoursite]/modules/AMS/upgrade
3) Follow instructions on screen
NOTE: If you decide to import comments from News, they WILL NO LONGER BE IN THE NEWS MODULE.
Comments are moved - NOT copied

You can actually run upgrade script from the AMS core, which is probably just an oversite in testing.

You clarified the process when you said,

That is not what the text file says.

I'd have picked up on it with an /AMS/upgrade/(slash behind the upgrade) in text document indicating upgrade was a folder instead of an upgrade script, which I thought it was.

I saw the folder, but I guess I'm too explicit about logic elements -- for some reason

Regardless, you're a good guy and I appreciate your sticking to this one for a solution.

i had no problems with just using the url " /AMS/upgrade " on a couple servers..

but have noticed on some servers if u don't put the ' / ' on the end of the url then you get a page not found or forbidden error..

the index.php isn't needed it's just the ' / ' that's needed.. it seems to be a server config..

It's really a matter of some hosts configs. Namely - when host created not as virtual host in apache, but as alias... So-called "trailing slash problem"

I'm using AMS on a site where the admin would like to have a more feature rich editor for creating color/image rich articles.

Is there an editor that will work now? If not is there one planned that will work well with the AMS?

Next version of AMS will support all the main editors (same as NewBB2), as for specifics of what their capabilities are in relation to your needs you'll have to read up on each editor.

It has come to that I need to convert from AMS back to News, as AMS clearly will not be worked on anymore.

I COULD do it by hand, but it would take forever with years of news in the tables.

Anyone got a solution to this?

Actually, there was an announcement a while back that someone is taking over the responsibility for AMS, and will be developing or fine tuning it further. I haven't heard anything ever since.
