Newbb 2.0.2

Brief Introduction to the Changes:

- Bugfix: silly delete Bug
- Bugfix: Poll Button was visible even if selected disallow in the Forum settings

The MP/HP/etc is just a toy, a feature, some eye-candy. It serves no greater purpose than to amuse. If you find it inappropriate to your site, disable it in settings.

"What it is" and "How does it calculate each of those things" are questions that have been answered numerous times in numerous threads here and on the dev site a short search away. In short, they relay info on post count and post activity/frequency.

Can we forget about these little bugfixes and start working on the horrendous speed issues this module has? The two versions released in the past week have been even slower than 2.0 was, and 2.0.2 is just fixing some things that 2.0.1 broke....

I think I can speak for 90%-95% of the users of this module when I say that the slowness of this module is everyone's top concern. When 2.0.1 came out and was around 25% slower and only made minor changes, that was a step in the wrong direction to be sure. FREEZE THE CODE ON THAT OTHER RUBBISH AND OPTIMIZE THE MODULE!

I hope that the "we" in that post means that you are working away diligently on your own to attempt a fix for the speed issue...
As we are all aware, this is OPEN SOURCE and the people who work so hard on all the free things we use on our sites have NO OBLIGATION to change a single line of code.
I, for one, am simply grateful for all the hard work these brilliant people put into all of the modules here... and although there are times when things may not work the way we wish, it's far more likely to get a positive result when addressing these individuals with the heaps of respect they have most assuredly earned!!
I must be in the 5%, because that post did not speak for me. I am happy with all of the work submitted, for even if it doesn't suit my own needs for speed reasons or anything else, it still provides a wonderful learning tool.
The bug fixes you call rubbish are other peoples urgent needs - much like your own on the speed issue. Have a little patience and a kind respectful tone to your posts and I'm sure one of the people who are working on this module will consider it.

Sorry about the rant - I just can't stand it that people take for granted what we have here.

there are several points to speed the Newbb 2.0 up and we are working on this for the next major release beside this Bugfix releases, one point is also XOOPS themself there are function which has to speed up to speed up all modules.

We are currently looking for caching database queries, this will increase the loadtime.

So we know about the speed but it is not that bad as you see on my sites ( see http://www.xoops2.org/modules/newbb i.e. )

Well at least I finally got some of you to acknowledge a speed issue.

I visited your site, it's just as slow as every other newBB site is. Slowness going into the newBB module, slowness coming out of the newBB module and going into another module, and slowness when loading threads (which varies from 1 second to 5 seconds seemingly at random).

If your defense for not fixing the speed issue is not having time, maybe it is time to get some more people involved.

To everyone else rushing to the defense of the newBB team, or to respond to those on the newBB team whom I have offended, I never said that I did not appreciate the work that they were doing. What I did say was that the dev team needs to figure out what the priorities are. Spending a long time to change one line of code, as noted by someone else above, does indeed seem like wasted time to me.

One person on your team really needs to be assigned the task of fixing the speed issue so that it stops getting pushed back. The rest of you can re-write the single line of code every month or so for the bugfix releases.

People like you make me sick coming up here do nothing only try to talk smart, read your own posts and FREEZE YOUR RUBBISH!

If you want to help do something useful than you can maybe say FREEZE THE CODE ON THAT OTHER RUBBISH AND OPTIMIZE THE MODULE!

1) I never said I hated the module. I said it's got one major, glaring flaw: it's very slow.

2) To respond to your modem remark, here are the results of my latest speed test: 4.45 Mbps. That is roughly 158 28.8bps modems. I would wager that this is faster than what you're on, which would make sense as I can tell that the module is very, very slow -- slower than ANYTHING ELSE IN XOOPS -- and you don't think it's slow at all or you think that XOOPS is the problem.

3) The server that my particular site is hosted on does not register any memory spikes, server load spikes, or even bandwidth spikes when people are using the newBB module. It is simply excessive, unoptimized database calls causing the slowdowns, nothing else.

4) The flaws are not with xoops, as no other XOOPS modules that I have used has this same issue. Blaming XOOPS caching is a waste of time, any uncached XOOPS module still performs better than newBB.

Now you can argue with me, be offended by what I say, and write more remarks that are off the point, or you can spend this time optimizing the code. :)

Now, before anyone gets offended again, I DO appreciate the work you have all done. You have created a very robust bulletin board that, when optimized, will BURY the competition. This goes back to my point about not worrying so much about fixing the other little things yet, except security holes, as the speed issue is really the ONLY thing holding this project back......

The intent was not to enrage or aggitate, merely to try and show that I've asked questions and hadn't received answers. Or even acknowledgement that I observed an issue with a "drop a bug in the bug tracker". I'm still not sure if my issue is a bug or expected behavior.

As for xoops2.org, I have posted there a couple different topics on same subject, the URL and topic you pointed to are not of major concern to myself. I only concern myself with issues coming from my users.

gippah, you might well be right, I also think that currently speed is one of the most visable issues with NewBB 2. However, your diplomacy skills are somewhere between non existant and very poor. Just a small tip, if you are wanting someone to do something for you, it usually isn't a good idea to offend them and piss them off. Wether you meant to offend or not is irrelevant, the fact is you did. Generally doing nothing but pointing out a modules shortcomings, and making what almost sound like demands on what the devs should be doing with THEIR time without in any way offering anything that might point to any real research/testing on your own account, or even offering your own time (even though your asking them to give theirs) isn't going to get you far. Perhaps you might like to help me expand oncomparision of NewBB1 Vs NewBB 2 so that we can give Pred and his team some semi - solid numbers to deal with?

Just updated from NewBB2 2.01 to 2.02 with the update pack, but my module version is still showing as 2.01. I noticed in xoops_version.php it is still listed as 2.01.

First I really appreciate all the works done by the guys who are providing XOOPS and Modules for FREE.

I am not a coder, so I can ONLY suggest my ideas to the dev team and they may accept my ideas or reject them on their own decision. I have no right to ask them to do anything as I didn't even write 1 line of code. All I have noticed is that they provide the code totally free. If you have any idea or fix or optimized code, than please submit to the dev team to help improve OPEN SOURCE software.

Even I didn't use NewBB for now, but the speed is FAR MORE THAT acceptable when I visit XOOPS.ORG and XOOPS2.ORG.

OPEN SOURCE software is getting better everyday, so if the features you are looking for are not ready now, than be patient, they will be ready when they are. For me, bugfix is more important then anything.

Well, you can complain about the problems, of course. But you should also report your environment: when and where did it happen? what was your browser and OS?(<=very important) what do you think made it happen? Or it will be very difficult to identify the cause of it.

As regards the speed issue of newbb2, I can't see such a critical slowdown with Opera7, Firefox1.0, and IE6 on windows98-2nd & XP.

If the slowdown happens after loading the page itself, your theme could be doing something wrong. (For instance, the css forgot assigning the width of a certain element...)

By the way, the newbb2 on your site runs fast enough for me, gippah.

I updated from NewBB 2.0 Final to NewBB 2.0.2 and it works great. My forum is very fast and I am very happy with it. I have translated it fully to my language. PEOPLE, try to translate te newbb ... then you will see how much work has done Predator and phppp. I thought it is going to make me crazy while only TRANSLATING. it is so much code ...

Now, I am waiting only one problem to be solved. Predator knows which.

NewBB 2 is actually a bit slower than Newbb 1, but nothing to be jumping up and down about unless you're running a very busy forum. I did a performance comparision of NewBB 1 and NewBB 2which can be found here

I must be in the other 5%, because I'm not experiencing speed issues. Could you supply information about your own processor, browser, type of connection and server abilities? How quickly/slowly are the pages loading, how huge is your forum, and how fast do you feel it SHOULD be?

I'm certainly not suggesting that you're out in left-field on this--maybe I have lower expectations than other people do. Are other people noticing this?

sorry if i am writing off topic, but if we cenvert the pages into html pages, is newbb going to be faster? because in phpbb forums i think there is a hack so that you can convert the pages into html pages, (i.e http://forum.majidonline.com (it is a persian website)) so while it is going to be better for search engines to find data in the websites, it is also going to be faster, please tell me if i am wrong , or you need any other information.
Note: on the Majdionline website only the forum and topic pages are html and the main page is .php . I also believe they made a html engine (it converts the .php extension pages into .html extension pages))
In addition,I think if you change newbb system, so there will be no need of using newbb.css file, and it can read the codes using theme files it may make it faster!

NewBB 2.02 works well for me. If it didn't, I would use one of the many other forums that also run under Xoops. We have choices. Bashing people is totally unnecessary.

Constructive criticism I've found to be well-received. It helps if this includes good examples, some background into your setup since that can be relevant, what you've tried and maybe even some suggestions. Since this is open source, we can all help out.

If coding isn't your forte, then lend a hand with translating or assessing the css or documenting.

If you have database experience, take a look at that part of it and give some feedback.

If you are a php whiz, then offer up some tuning tips or check the code for bottlenecks.

Everyone can report bugs.

There is a lot that everyone can do. I must admit that this thread has made me ALMOST want to suggest an ignore option for the forums that turns annoying people's posts to the background color for me....

Thanks for the nice forum Pred and the rest of the NewBB team. I am really looking forward to seeing it evolve and continue to improve. You took on a huge task when you volunteered to update the forums and I want to say that it was time well spent. Kudos!

To mister speed machine, I don't think you absolutly need to offer solutions to problems as you see them if you have zero skills. Fine, but you really should offer info on your environment (OS, server, etc. etc.). Post a link to YOUR site so we can see how slow it is. I've seen too many sites that were slow or fugly because of the config or content and not XOOPS itself. So until I see it I'll assume it is another bling site with every flashy option bouncing around slowing things down.

Meanwhile, let the devs get back to finding *constructive* critisisms and working on those.

I've updated the templates numerous times, as this error shows up with the activation of the Recent Topics block on my top page. Reuploaded the blocks template file.

Totally lost as to what to check next...al my searches don't get me anywhere.

The way this loadingspeed issue has been brought up could have been done on a different way.

Although I am really very happy with the release of newbb version 2.2 with all its great and nifty features, I also stumble (for quit some time) into this forum-loadspeed aspect.

Recovering bugs is very important. Afterall we all want to have a secure, best functioning forum! But I also think the loadingtime is an important aspect. Next to the other modules the newbb-forum is one of the major and most used modules within XOOPS and therefore the loadingtime could be somewhat enhanced.

Odd IE Popup problem

I posted about this before, but I havnt been able to find a resolution.

The popup menus in newbb2 dont work in Internet Explorer. But they DO work in Firefox and some other browsers.

I have cleared my caches, and inserted the proper code into the themes.html but it still just wont work in IE.

Would anyone else have any ideas? I am not the brightest Tuna in the sea. But might this be a CSS problem? Would there be a line of code that I can use that would identify IE and handle it differently?
