Hello fellow Xoopsers !

The SmartFactory has just published a little hack that suddenly makes my life much easier. Let me explain !

Maybe I'm a bit lazy, but I often don't log to a site unless I need to. This causes an obvious problem : if people send me Private Message, there is a good chance I won't see it right away. Since we live in an 'instantaneous society', I like to receive PM... instantaneously

So I did a little hack allowing users to get notified by mail whenever they receive a Private Message. Of course, this only applies to users who have selected the Email notification method.

Great hack! This should be implemented in the main XOOPS package as an option in the admin preferences. It's standard with Vbulletin and Invision.

I also think it should be implemented in the core. I'll submit a patch at SF. As for the the option, someone also suggested we could add an option in the user profile. However, personnaly, If I choose to receive notification by email, it makes sens that I also receive PM notification by email. Would it be usefull to receieved all notifications by email except for PM ?

I'm just thinking out loud...

Great! It's a nice hatch!
I think that also should be implemented in the main XOOPS future package, a full system of PM (like phpBB), in this way XOOPS could be candidate for a professional Intranet use.

I like this hack. My suggestion for future enhancments are:

- The option to get a daily email with a list of all updates to the site, news articles posted, forum posts etc.. Just a stats email, nothing more.

- The option to choose PM notify by email, from the users admin page.

I agree that this is a very nice feature. It'll be on the X2.1 list, but IMHO if we do this, we should do it right. The system should be able to deal with mail bounces (setting X bounces recieved = suspend this service), to minimise the server load (here on XOOPS.org the PM table is the biggest table, filled with notifications that nobody looks at). So, I agree that this should be part of the system, but along with some other enhancements to make it a safe and decent feature

This would be great, but the option for it to be daily, weekly or monthly would be better. It would send users via email a post with the latest active topics, news, etc (latest from each module).

My users have been asking for this for some time.

This would of course be really usefull I would take on this project but I'm beginning to be pretty saturated

Hi,

I installed this hack and it didn't seem to work.

I just received a message from my brother who is co-webmaster and he asked me why he received 6 emails?

Apparently, something is not workiong properly!

But what if you only want to recieve PM notifications? I generally select not to recieve emails (as ticking that box, might imply, 'yeah send me spam'), while I would want to be emailed about PM's.

Jason, I'm not sure you are talking about the same thing. You seem to be refering (unless I'm mistaking ) to the check box in the profile saying Receive occasional email notices from administrators and moderators?
This has nothing to do with this hack. The only thing this hack does is notify you by email when you receive a PM IF AND ONLY IF you have chosen Email (use adress in my profile) as the Notification Method.

I will need more details on what happen. When this is happening. What di you do ? What did the other webmaster did ? What version of XOOPS are u running, etc...

However, it would be better if you could post this problem in the SmartFactory's forum as it could maybe help others...

Make sure you follow the instructions in the read me. Installing this hack is not as easy as installing a module.

When you install it exactly as stated, however, you'll be VERY pleased with the results!

I just want to pop in and offer my thanks as well. This was a much-needed hack. I work at a large software company (that will go unnamed), and almost every one of our internal applications has this type of email notification.

GREAT WORK! I'd give you more than two thumbs up if I had more than two thumbs!!!

Yep, it seems pretty much similar, though I use a slightly different code.

so this sends a notification to the user, when there is a new PM ...
..is there a possibility of an infinite loop being gernerated... when you select to be notified by PM, and then you get sent a notification of a new PM, by PM, which will trigger another notification, and so on???
