Everyone is looking for it no one has it so we built it. Since it is on a donation basis the simplest donation, even 5 bucks, and you got yourself a great module. After all I am not trying to get rich off this just trying to cover the cost of the programmers. I have seen really crappy modules go for so much more and when it all said and done you feel ripped off. I made sure this would not happen here with this one.

Nothing wrong with trying to get money but it will hold back a lot of people.

I'd like to see it in action on something other than gaming/fantasy sites. I find it hard to read the dark themes of these sites or to understand the context.

My needs are for teams and class divisions in grassroots auto racing. I'm looking to expand it to keep results of the race season and chart the results at season end.

interesting module idea.

Also be aware that there is nothing stopping me, or anyone else, from getting this mod and releaseing it to the public for free. I have no intention of doing so, but legally I could.

I don't understand the legal theft comment either and don't want to argue that. You are free to charge money if everything else is done right.

To my question, any other sites using this we could look at? I have zero interest in gaming so am looking for something more interesting to get an idea of what this can do. Right now it looks rather simple so I don't understand it yet until I see it in action.

I'm hoping to do something that might be along the lines of this but so far nothing really comes close enough.

No big debate here. No threat either. If I needed it I would pony up the dough. I don't need it (in fact I am not even sure what it does)... so no dough

XOOPS is GPL (not LGPL) The GPL explicitly states that modules of a GPL program must also fall under the GPL as well. No big debate. Just a fact. Like I said, I have no plans on releasing your module for free etc. Yes, I too think that would be rude. I was just stating that it would be legal. Letting you know that someone may do it, and they have every legal right to do so. You also have every legal right to charge whatever you want.

Some may feel that XOOPS as a whole is so valuable and available without charge, and be offended by you charging for a small module. I do not feel that way, I am just giving you a reason why someone might release your mod for free.

Another module and most welcomed. I really do enjoy seeing new modules I believe that the new creation of modules are exactly what keeps XOOPS moving! You did a great job however I learnt something very valuable last year about xoops.org community. I mentioned money and nearly lost my head here!!! Basically what im saying is XOOPS AND MONEY DO NOT MIX. XOOPS IS FREE! The modules should be FREE also I appreciate what you have done but you shouldn’t say the module you cant have unless you buy it is just so unethical especialy that you needed to download XOOPS which was FREE in the first place to create the module. XOOPS isn’t like that as FlySwatter said “Why don't you just put it up for free and have a donation option?” I think you would do far better by doing this… some people may even support the module and want to help make modifications. Either way good 1 with the module im sure many who can afford to buy it will enjoy it.

No one asked you to create a module that costed money and needed to pay programmers. There are programmers here that would have created it for free eventually i think that you created the module and paid the programmers so you could use it and then thought i might sell it and make some money to cover for my expenses yes please do sleep on it ...

This kind of debate comes up often enough. Do what you want on that front of course.

Back to the issue at hand. Does anyone have this module installed on a site different than the one listed? I don't know clan from tiddly winks, I'm too old for that. I still can't get a good feel for what it can really do from the listed site.

Is there additional functionality for registered users or is it what I can see already? Is it simply a form "application" for the profile and then a linked list to view each profile?

I am not against charging for a module or anything else. Charging money is very much allowed under the GPL.

I simply mentioned that charging for a GPL work up front is not a good business plan.

From GNU GPL FAQ:

The GPL says that the whole combined program has to be released under the GPL. So your module has to be available for use under the GPL.

As you can see, once you release your module (charged for or not) "the cat is out of the bag". People may do what they want with the module, including distribute it for free or fee.

I do not like people saying XOOPS and money don't mix. XOOPS and money mix just fine. Some people pay for hosting, some pay for development, some ask for donations. XOOPS and charging for code do not mix because of the GPL.

I am not upset by the fact you are charging for your module. I just point out the flaw in your "business plan". Yes I know that it is not your plan to "make a ton of money", but when ever there is money involved, it is business.

The only thing I can say is if you require a donation before you send the module then it's not a donation really is it? It's PAYMENT. ;) Don't call it a donation if it's mandatory.

To be honest, I have a similar module almost ready to be published for free... Not exactly the same, but something which could produce the same result.

After listening to everyone, sleeping on it, and reading the emails from the people that did donate to get this module I have come up with this.

First, yes at the time a donation was asked for to recieve this module. Since it did not have a set price if you donated 5 buck or 50 you still got the same thing it is a donation.

Second, I was not looking at a way to get rich only to have help shouldering the cost. Yes XOOPS runs on the donation basis and maybe this module should to after all it was made to have inspire the sites that use a roster in nukephp and post nuke to move over to XOOPS.

Third, you all made great points and I heard you. So I have thought that maybe I should submit it for free download. This way good programmers can help out supporting, customizing and improving upon this module.

Finally, I have decided to release this under the GPL in a few weeks and let it spread. Hopefully honest people out there will donate if they use it, as I have always tried to donate to the ones I use even if it was 5 bucks.

Does anyone know how to submit this to XOOPS.org to get it on the module list?

If not I will have it on the website listed above for now as a free download.

Hey All,

Just wanted to give you an update. We have decided to add a few features that the original roster page, One is being editable Groups.

What this means to you is if you were a school, and wanted Mr. GreenJeans Class to all be together you could.

We have also decided to name the module:

xRoster with 1.0 being the first public release. Please bare with us so we can improve our module for you the users.

Includes editable application form (user and admin side), Groups and title editors. Turn on/off the user side application form. Turn on/off the user side hyperlinks for email. So much more to list and yet a very simple module to use.

Can be used for Artists, Clans, Clubs, Churches, Business, Communitites, Schools, etc. Very universal and easy to configure for your needs.

Just wanted to say thank you to everyone that has downloaded / recieved this module and donated. 8 out of the 9 who downloaded donated and everyone that has asked to have it emailed to them has donated. It really helps me out right now due to a month off of work starting monday.

Well I wan't it and I am more than willing to donate. Respect to Arowana for his efforts. Can't afford much but there are a few dollars in my Paypal account.

All this fuss about donations will do XOOPS more harm than good in my opinion (which aint worth much as I'm just a newbie and what do I know?)
