Our Xoops 2.0.17 site used to sent lots of spam

I'm not sure this is a bug and the right place to ask.
One of my XOOPS (2.0.17) sites is used by a spammer, I think.
When the site is closed this data traffic stops.
I think a mail script is used to sent lots of data from my site.
Does anyone know if this happened before and how I can stop it?

Try to disable the modules that have email forms. If the SPAM still goes on, you don't have problems with your email forms. If still SPAM is sent out by your page. Implement an exact email topic filter in your forms. Allow only exact email addresses, only normal topic text in the subject and now email addresses, only one sender and receiver email address. Do a google search on php form mailer and spam.

hope it helps
Markus

Thank you for your reply.
I disabled and later de-installed the formulaire module.
But the outgoing datatraffic went on after that. The traffic is related to the directories where the XOOPS files are. There are no other modules that use email forms. Can a spammer use my XOOPS site for this in any other way?

Is this your own server? Linux? Windows? sendmail? check the processes you have running on your box

Not my own. Apache server and sendmail.
Providers says it comes from the unsafe XOOPS scripts in the map where the XOOPS files are.

It doesn't have to be XOOPS. I had a similar case on my VPS. I've installed XOOPS there, but it was for testing reasons, so I didn't pay much attention to it and I didn't use it often.

Somehow after a month it was shut down by the Hosting company stating that I'm generating Outgoing DOS. I've reinstalled XOOPS, but it continued, so I had to re-install the server. Since then there is no problem.
