Xoops Crash and Burn or Rise Up?

I was a newbie to XOOPS a year ago and over the course of 10 months or so, learned XOOPS and deployed my site. I learned a lot and realized how powerful XOOPS was and could be. However as I became more educated about the tool, I realized that it was in a state of flux.

Recently I've noticed a lot of posts with people arguing about control of Xoops, modules are developed in non US languages only, modules are out of date, etc.

During my search for a CMS tool, one contender that i liked was vbulletin.org. I think they have the right idea. While they charge for the product, there are timely updates, upgrades, modules, etc. And the price is very nominal. $160 for a lifetime brand license. The modules also have costs but are $50. So for a couple of hundred bucks they have updated code, support, etc. They also offer professional services.

Now my question is why can’t that be done here? It would certainly result in a better centralized product with more frequent updates, new features, etc. Think of all the people trying to deploy a site that are not coders? They are in for a tough road.

So is XOOPS set to crash and burn or rise from the ashes? I'm rooting for XOOPS but it's getting difficult to hang on.

Just my 0.02 worth so dont flame me unmercefullously...

Given the events over the past few months / years, I can understand your concerns.

However, there is a plan here.

Like you I support XOOPS and all that is possible, however, I became frustrated with the waiting.

Rather than continue to wait, I decided to become a part of the solution, rather than just wait for someone else to 'get around to it' When the call went was made for volunteers, I answered.

Xoops will only succeed if people get involved. By getting involved, I mean by helping the project by doing what they can, be it write code or just answer simple questions.

There are a few people here on the boards who believe that they only way they can help is to argue, be little, and post negative comments. While to some extent this can be good, however, the tone of the post can be a bit grating. Personally, I do not agree with everything that has been done to transition to the New Xoops, however unless we start we will never get there.

If you would like help and be a part of solution, please PM me or anyone on the Project council. I am sure you have some skills that could be put to use.

I joined the CBB 4.0 board and it is bascially dead.

I have hacked and fixed numerous modules just to get my own site up and running and passed those tips along. I have answered many questions on xoops.org as well. So I am involved.

However I cant get involved much more due to several XOOPS roadblocks. Once a clear vision, mission statement, and unbiased leadership is established for XOOPS I will reconsider.

I'd love to share some of my tghoughts with the council but not sure what they even want. To that end I see a long post regrading the fighting about the Council! Sheesh.

The product has the potential...

With all due respect, I've been on the dev.xoops.org list for CBB 4.0 (You invited me and I accepted) and there's been no new information, nor a 4.0 branch.

I also PM'ed you on this site regarding 4.0 and havent heard back.

At this time, I dont know XOOPS well enought to be a "core" developer. Plus I am trying to write a custom module for my site which has a monster learning curve.

Thanks for the invite though.

Re: Xoops Crash and Burn or Rise Up?

it has been almost a year that i joined the CBB team. i joined as a "Feature designer/Tester", since i had limited knowledge of php, and i like testing things out.

i contacted kurt a few months ago and tried contacting some others on the testing team (since i was also wondering what was happening with cbb. ), but not all responded. so now i have been trying to get the project moving a little faster..

but not everyone knows or has a svn client. i was offered svn commit access months ago but i was not comfortable with it yet. until i was playing around with the XOOPS malaysia svn (i lost a few files back then.. nothing too important). well anyways. phppp is like the leader of cbb and also on other things. he has been busy. and i have been a bit busy at time with school and work.

so yesterday i asked for commit access for svn and put cbb and frameworks for download. (i will have to make a new package.. since it has changed. changes to cbb have been made by me yesterday and phppp made some changes to cbb and frameworks since yesterday in SVN. so cbb is not dead. its just that it was progressing a little slowly.

so i have put the packages in svn in a downloadable package (suggested by kurt or erol .. both?)(http://xoopsforge.com/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=1292)
promote the use the dev.xoops tracker.
and keep this post updated.. (http://xoopsforge.com/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?post_id=2384#forumpost2384)

Edit.. i edited my post for better.. 'flow'
