One of the things that helped me a lot was creating a custom block and adding text, images and moving it around the page. Move it to the sidebars, center etc.

Then make more custom blocks and do the same thing. Doing this will soon show you how to design pages and you can go onto more complex things.

Don't forget to go to groups and set the permissions for who the blocks will be visible to.
