Instalkl php bb as a stand alone and leave it for 2 weeks
come back and its full of spam.
Install smf and leave it for 6 months.
No spam

a simple piece of css can solve that.
For normal use the forums function is quite adequate.
Altough there are some points for improvement.
But if you have the solution, it might get updated and into the next version.

For your data losses, there is only one solution: backup!!!
And there is always the possibility to dry run and test your updates local on your PC with eg a XAMPP server, before you do the updates live on the production system.

For the quality of some modules: Google is your friend. So, read a few comments before you start and this will avoid already a lot of problems. Mosttimes the version number will inform you on the 'quality' of the module.
