I'm wondering if it's possible for admins to be able to post to the news page without having to do a 2-step publish?

Hmmm..... Not quite sure what you mean by '2-step publish'. Can you please be a bit more specific?

Without authorisation I presume?

News 1.2 features an "approve" checkbox directly in the submit form for users with approve permissions so the article no longer needs to be approved in a 2-step procedure.
