I originally installed XOOPS in a subdirectory called "XOOPS" in my main web directory, but this is causing a problem in loading the default module in some browsers. Can I move all the XOOPS files and folders into the Main directory or will that mess up the file paths to the database etc?

you should be able to move your files from the /xoops directory into the / directory. After you do the move, you'll need to go into /mainfile.php and change the XOOPS_URL and XOOPS_ROOT_PATH constants to reflect the new location of the XOOPS files (remove "/xoops" from both should do the trick).
