having trouble changing the logo gif in my theme. I can put the new picture but it won't let me update the size on the site.

the sizing is usually in your theme.html file. Best to work on a copy of a theme and add it to the System/Preferences. You need to check the "Update" option near the top of General Prefernces until you are stable with .html changes. .css changes happen without this option.
