Hi there,

I'm planning on building a classifieds website (as close to http://www.craigslist.org as possible) for my city here in Europe. I really like the simplicity and ease of use of craigslist and want to get something very close to this. Most of the php classified scripts which I have looked at on the web are not suitable (they tend to be too complicated and not offer the basic requirements I need).

Somebody recommended XOOPS for developing my site and I was hoping some of you would tell me whether or not it would be suitable.

I want to bassically build a text only site. Most of the XOOPS templates seem to have far too many features and sections on the page. Would it be possible to just have a very simple layout? On the main page shall just be a list of catagories and subcatagories of ads. Each link should bring you to the relevant page with the list of ads in that catagory. There also needs to be a self posting option for people to place their own ads where I can asign suitable fields and options.

I know there is a "myads" module but i cannot find a site using it to see what it looks like/how it works. Does anyone know of one?

If anyone could let me know whether or not XOOPS is suitable for developing a site like the one I want to I'd really appreciate it. Or if not any advice of how else to go about it would be great. I have only the most basic knowledge of web design so simplicity is important!

Thanks in advance,
Robert

I don't know if there is already a module for doing what you want to do, so if you are capable of a little php scripting XOOPS will give you a good framework to build such a site.

What is your comfortability level with php? If you don't have any you might find someone willing to help you build such a module here. I imagine a nice classified management module would be useful on many sites.

I haven't tried searching for a classifieds module in the downloads. I assume you've already tried that :)

hey robertf,

one of the best XOOPS sites in my opinion is builderb's site: http://www.folsomliving.com/modules/xdirectory/

to download xdirectory follow this link: https://xoops.org/modules/mydownloads/visit.php?cid=24&lid=480

with a little work and imagination the above should work for you.

Thanks a lot.

I had a look at that site and the myads module in operation. It seems like it might be well suited to my needs.

Do you think I could basically have a page featuring the classifeds module and nothing else.

I'll play around with the module, see what extra features I might need and get back to you for hopefully further help!

Thanks Again,
Robert

What I did was use the Xdirectory module, setting it to the main pages in 'general preferences' and then going to admin of blocks and turn off most of my blocks for the xdirectory page.
