Is it possible to change the forum's graphics using style.css?

I want to try and get rid of the XOOPS style X's in my theme.

http://www.future-outpost.com in the forums

Images are separate from your .css, except of repositioning in tables and other such attributes.

To edit your images, you would need to change the images in your "../modules/newbb/images" folder. Using the default names is recommended. All you need then do is to create new or edit existing images however you see fit.
