Multi-site database vs one database per site

Would it be better to have 20 databases versus one database with a 1000 tables? Is there a performance gain by going to multi-site environment? Any other pro's or con's?

I'm no expert in these matters, but if the 20 databases are all on the same database server, I think the performance gain from having fewer tables in each database is minimal.
However, I would love to hear from an expert in this area.
