But i got see any news under the classic view even when I delete everything in the templates_c folder!

any ideas to how i could fix this? if not would it be easy to get the old news module back.

Try this:
1) Disable any cache in the news module
2) Make sure you are not using a template set other than default
3) Update the module (again)
4) Clear the templates_c folder for any news-related
templates (or all files except index.html)
5) Update the module again

---
ALL problems, I've seen related to this has been caused by an old template being used.

Take the news_index.html from the module and place in your preferred theme's templates folder, replacing the existing news_index.html file.

Re: Xoops news 1.2

sorry - I assumed that the problematic theme had theme-specific module templates.

My guess is (once again) that there are compiled/cached versions of the old template in templates_c or cache directories.

Persistence is needed, I'm afraid.
