I think the sections pages look rather dull, I'd like to know if there's a way, for example, of putting a table around each article link (like on this page and which file(s) I need to be looking at.

There is no templates in the basic sections module, its depreciated really.

But the file to look at is index.php in the root of the sections module.

wfsections by catswolf has lots more features, a new version coming out soon

Modify theme.html and you'll be able to change the look and feel of anything in the middle. If you want a particular internal document to look unique just post it as html and make your edits in the html document body itself.
