Is there any way to allow the anonymous commentor to show their name instead of "Anonymous" when they post comments to news? Without forcing them to register with the site?

Not without extensive hacking of the comments system

Probably not a good move from a standpoint of keeping your site clean either. If people can post whatevver they want without accountability, then at some point that is going to be abused.
