Try doing a CHMOD 777 on the new theme directory you uploaded and it's contents. If the permissions are bad you'll get a blank page like you've described.

I haven't used FTP (insecure) in ages but I wonder if the usual ones (GUI, oh well) typically show the rights and allow a user to easily change as required. As to what are rights and what does it mean is up to the user.

A little trick for when you play with themes: Leave a working theme set as default and System/Pref it and your new one as user selectable (could lock it down to registered users or just webmaster). This way you select the new one to test and if it breaks you'll be able to get back to the default.

Oh - and blank pages: turn on PHP debug (plenty of posts about how to do that) before doing anything else. 9 times out of 10 it leads to the answer.
