question about smtp

php4.3.4, xoops2.0.5, windows2003, IIS6

when i use smtpauth sending mail, system return this:
"SMTP Error: Could not authenticate".

i've checked my input and there are no error in my username and password.

what sould i do to fix this?

This might be a stupid question, but do you have an SMTP server running? If not, is your SMTP settings correct in your php.ini file?

there is a smtp server running in my office, the server require auth when sending mails.
and my php.ini has smtp server info like this:

SMTP = mail.xxx.com ; for Win32 only

here i use xxx instead of my true domain name, and this server is my smtp server which i use everyday.

if smtp server doesn't exist, or has a wrong name, i think system should give me this error:"SMTP Error: could not connect to SMTP host server(s)"

ok, i find something more.
when i use a php file just like the example at the homepage of http://phpmailer.sourceforge.net/ in order to check my phpmail, i got the same error: "SMTP Error: Could not authenticate".
but when i use the very same file at phpmailer 1.71(downloaded from phpmailer.sourceforge.net), it works very well!

i am not good at php programme, could someone help me find out where should i change to fix this mail problem?

add:
i replaced original class.smtp.php with the file in phpmailer 1.71, test php file then could send mails, but XOOPS still can't, same error as before.

Hello,

I've got the same problem with SMTPAuth!

if I use the default phpMail:
>> Warning Mail(): SMTP server response: 550 5.7.1
>> Unable to relay for newaccount@domain.xxx

I must to use SMTPAuth because my mail server is MSExchange and I cannot open the relay channels.

Any suggestion will be very apreciated!
