Im not too keen on the whole Smarty code and the creation of XOOPS website skins / themes but
i had a question:

Is it passable to use graphic Buttons instead of using Menu Links in the main menu?
I would suppose the buttons would be supported by each individual theme used because i create Black and Red buttons for a BLACK theme
but a user wants to use one of the other skins i have to choose from, well
then the buttons would need to change as well.

So...... using Buttons instead of Menu links?

I guess the simple way would be to just create an HTML block which includes the correct HTML code but again if the theme changes..... that HTML block i created for that skin would need to change along with it

Did you have already a look at Multimenu?
When some extras are added to your site, there is always the possibility that some options need to be added to the theme css files.

but it was pretty confusing for me
