Is there a smarty var available in theme.html to tell me which module I am currently looking at?

yes. look closely into any of the morphogenesis theme versions. it can be in these two ways, applied as css styles:

In the theme.html


<{$xoops_dirname}>

In the other blocks .html


<{$block.module}>

Ex CSS blocks.html:
#xo-canvas-leftcolumn .xo-block.smartsection .xo-blockcontent

Ex CSS theme.html
body.smartsection #...
