2.2.3 Final is no longer current. The recommended stable version is 2.0.18.1 and the latest version of the 2.2.x branch is 2.2.6

There's something about these autoinstallers that I don't trust.

First things first:
Check that your /cache, /templates_c and /uploads folders are set to CHMOD 777

Secondly, there was a post a week or so about a similar thing in that users couldn't register using IE7. Is this the browser that you are using to register?

I have used yes IE7 but also Firefox 2.0

Some really old themes (i.e. released pre-2.0.14) might not have the centre-bottom, bottom-left and bottom-right blocks coded in, but this is easily sorted in most cases if there's an older theme that you really like. folks on here are usually quick to offer help.

As for modules, always go for the latest version. The Module Repository isn't entirely up to date. If you're unsure about a module's version or are looking for a type of module, e.g. News, Forums, Photo Gallery, etc, then ask in here first as there is often more than one module to do the same task. Each will have their merits.

I have to say that if your site is very new, or in the process of being built, then I'd be tempted to start again and do a manual upload and install of 2.0.18.1 - this is the surest way that you'll be able to upgrade to later XOOPS versions, e.g. 2.3.0 when it's released.
