I want to remove the option for people to register themselves

It's on the main user menu before people sign in.. there is an option to allow people to 'register' for the secured area. It points to register.php.

I've looked around to try to figure out how I can remove this from the menu - do I have to edit the template?

You are saying edit the code, correct?
There is no place to just "uncheck" this option in a setting somewhere?

Have you looked at the System>Preferences>User Settings in your administration area? The very first option is to disallow user registration. You should get familiar with the program. Go through everything in the administration.

Are you sure that's applicable for XOOPS Version 2.0.15 ?
I can't seem to find what you are talking about..

Actually, the 'register' button still remains on my user menu, but when you click on it - it now says "registration is closed".. isn't there a way to just remove it from the user menu without editing the code so I can easily add it back at a later date?

Post the link to your site. Disable the Login block.

I don't want to disable login - I want to disable registration.. and do it manually...

As I see it, you have three options:

1. disable registrations completely

2. Allow registrations but set the system to "Admin Activation", thereby giving you control of things

3. Edit that template as advised (not too difficult) and, to be sure, rename register.php to fool the smartar$es

From what you say, either of 2 or 3 would do; just make your choice of which suits you best.
