Now I realise this was discussed some time ago. Still, having read the old thread and links, I still don't entirely get it. Sorry. just for info, this could really put people off moving to Xoops....

----------

Hi all

I had previously been testing Joomla and thought today I'd have a look at Xoops.

Everything looked great until I tried to download and use a new template.

They download in .zip form yet the upload in XOOPS requires .tar.

Am I missing something or is this a huge oversight? I appreciate this is open source and therefore I am not complaining, just concerned that something so basic is missed. That I should stick with Joomla. Or I'm an idiot......

Please help......

from what i understand... template is different from theme

theme is your website main layout..theme,html, style.css etc

& template is module layout...eg. system_waiting_block.htm etc

when you download a theme ...you extract the content of the theme zip to

www.yoursite.com/themes/your_themefoldersname/

then you choose your default theme in admin panel...system -> preferences -> general settings

.tar.gz, .tar.bz & .tar are common linux zip methods, alot of people package this way to avoid corruption between linux server<->windows PC. The purpose is for you to upload the tarball to your server and unzip it there instead of downloading it and unzipping it on your PC then uploading.

It's not something I'd fear would cause people to leave/not use XOOPS as programs such as "winrar" and "7zip" will unzip these types of files on a windows pc....(you just cant use the generic windows "Extract..." function)

Winrar
7zip

Hi Mike123acc

Themes from the themes repository are in zip format and (once decompressed) are added to your themes folder. Templates are the Smarty template files that affect the appearance of specific module pages. A search for both terms here should reveal in more detail the different ways they work.
A thread is for life. Not just for Christmas.

Thanks for that.

Programmers messing with langauge again.....

To admin..... XOOPS looks like a great package, but it is a shame such simple things are made so complicated becuase the development team decide a theme and a template are different.

So where do I get templates from? Or is that only for customised templates?

May I add IZarc to that list?

It's completely free, too.

Well, by definition, theme and template mean two different things entirely:

template - a standard layout usually containing basic details of the page dimensions.

theme - a file or (usually) collection of files (php, theme, css, jpg, gif, png), which together determine the look and feel of your site.

A template says where it should go, a theme makes it pretty ;)

Fair point sublime.

I appreciate the replys and effort it takes to write them. Thanks to all for that. As for me, I think my XOOPS experimentation has finished. Just proving too difficult / too long-winded to make it look good, to make basic layout changes. I have worked out changing the themes now (thanks for the help), but everything is just taking to long with it. Back to Joomla......

Thanks again, and hope XOOPS work out great for all of you.

It's all good man. I understand completely.

As a themer myself, I and others have been trying to change the way all of that works to make it easier on themers and inevitably users. *shrug*. We'll see what happens. But in the mean time, good luck to ya.
