Can somebody explain to me why the domain name sometimes displays ashttp://www.mydomain.com and sometimes ashttp://mydomain.com.

Is it important?

It seems that sometimes (often enough to be a problem) my site will not download when trying to accesshttp://www... but if I change tohttp://mydomain, then the page does display.

Any answers?

Thanks a lot!!!

I believe I would go along with this discussion.
In some cases it does make a difference.

example.
http://aristotle.net <<redirects to web.aristotle.net
http://www.aristotle.net << same as www.aristotle.net

Thanks Bluestocking!

I checked the article, it seems to say that its best not to have the no www option.

So can I get rid of it? Do I do this in mainfile.php?

How come XOOPS shows pages in www. and no www. - I'm guessing there must be a reason?

Thanks

I believe that for SEO purposes it is best to restrict access to www only. As pointed out in the above mentioned webmaster world forum, allowing http access as well *shouldn't* but can cause a duplicate content issue and affect your PR.

Just create an .htaccess file in the root directory and add one of code examples shown. Always use www in mainfile.
A thread is for life. Not just for Christmas.

Unfortunately my host server won't let me use .htaccess files

Is there another way to do it?

How come the XOOPS system is built to have both www. and no www.?

Search engines may think www.mydomain.com and mydomain.com are two different sites.

You should set up a permanent redirect (technically called a "301 redirect") between these sites. Once you do that, you will get full search engine credit for your work on these sites. By correctly configuring a permanent 301 redirect, the search rankings might improve as all inbound links are correctly counted for the website.
