I would like to see images that replace the typical type face and color bar in the menu. Look to the left under 'Community'. How about replacing 'All about Xoops' with an image instead and so on down the list.

Multimenu asks for a 'name' for the image, but this image already has a name (as you can see), so it didn't work. I know they would take up more vertical space but that's OK because it will attract more attention.

Any modules capable or upcoming?

try using multimenu... you should be able to accommodate your images with that.
