I posted a related question here:https://xoops.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=51457

I'm migrating from MySQL 4 to MySQL 5 myself. I'm checking out MySQL 5 on a test server first. I haven't had any issues so far, but I've only done a little testing.

One issue: phpMyAdmin displayed a warning message about the PHP multibyte-string extension not being loaded. I resolved this by installing the "php-mbstring" extension.
