This is usually caused by 1 of 2 things.
1. You did not enter the database details correctly in mainfil.php.
Since you said this happed all of a sudden, than this would not be the cause.
2. Your web host's MySQL server is experiencing difficulties or is down.
You may want to make sure that the MySQL database can be connected to. If you do not have access to phpMyAdmin, or a similar tool, you may want to contact your hosting provider.
