Is 1.44 an upgrade to 1.1 that installed with XOOPS 2.0.13? If so, do I just replace the whole module and then click the upgrade button on my modules administration page?

That appears to be the case, but I wanted to clarify because I'm new to XOOPS and I don't want to lose my news articles.

There's a little more to it than that.

You already know to make backup copies of your web site and its database before you make any changes to it.

In addition, there is a separate update file inside of the News 1.44 module that needs to be run. You'll find in in the modules admin section, I think.

There should also be an upgrade.txt file you may want to take a look at, as well.

so it is a newer version of the same module then?

As for making backups - backing up the site is easy enough - I'm not sure how to back up the database. I'm new to XOOPS, MySQL and PHP.

I thought perhaps the update button ran the upgrade file - I'm not quite sure how to "run" a php file - do you just open it in the browser? Or is it something you do from teh command line?

Yes, it's the latest version. The update button will take care of some of the upgrade functions, but you need to run the other file in your browser. As far as backing up your site's database, take a look in the XOOPS module repository. You'll be looking for a module called phpmyadmin. Get the latest version. Any questions, just ask.
